Handloading for 7.62x54R

The title is pretty self-explanatory. Does anyone do it? Where do you get brass and bullets? Dies?

I have about 800 rounds of surplus, and it's pretty good. But I'd like some lighter loads for shooting with my scout scope on it. I can't hardly shoot the mil-surp off a bench or a rest because it kicks the crap out of me. I think it's the angle, because off hand is OK. Well, looking for some wisdom from someone that's done it, and trying to breath more life into our Mosin forum here.

Sorry, .22Guy, I've never handloaded anything, much less for the mosin.

Surplus is just too cheap for me to even look into it.

I know I've read some threads in the forum of gents that do handload for 'em, though. So, hopefully they'll catch this and shed some light on it for ya.

What little I can suggest is if you're going to reuse brass, get Wolf Gold (also known as Prvi Partisan), since it's actually brass-cased, non-corrosive and boxer-primed, unlike the majority of 7.62x54R which is berdan-primed.

A sweet load is a .308 diameter 110 gr.Hornady spire point with 42.0 grains of 3031 powder...Light recoil and 2700 fps Muzzle velocity... about like a .300 Savage round.
Another fairly accurate light round is a 150 gr.Hornady.308 spire point with 41.5 grains of 4895 powder at 2450 Muzzle Velocity.

Talking i reload for my mosins

hello .22

you can get good dies from "LEE RELOADING EQUIPMENT" YOU WONT PAY ALOT BUT THERE GOOD QUALITY, I HAVE A 2 DIE SET AND I LIKE IT, MIDWAY CARRIES THEM I THINK, as for brass i know of two sources, GRAF AND SON AND ALSO HUNTINGTONS, YOU CAN ALSO BUY THE BRASS CASED WOLF AMMO and shoot it, its good stuff not typical wolf quality, its not made in Russia its made in Serbia(same company that makes Hanson and Prvi Partisan) i have a pile of this stuff and its great for reloading i have never had a problem with it, you can also buy Selier and Bellot ammo its Czech made, its the same company that makes that good Czech silvertip mil surp everyones raving about(and rightly so its great!!) if your rich() you can buy Norma ammo or brass, im not rich but i have about two boxes worth of this stuff its good, but i dont see any differance between it and the other stuff i mentioned to justify paying that much, i have a connection to some Sako 180 gr ammo(very good brass) but its a little steep in price $12.00 for 10 rnds its old production stuff ,it would be good to shoot and reload the brass but thats being said i would put it in the same catagory as the Norma>> hope this helps >. ps good load for the 54r would be 49 grs of imr 3031 w/ 150 gr bullet<< (cartridges of the word 10th edition pg 338) if you want a copy of this page from the book i would be glad to help a fellow "MOSINMAN" my email is t53joe762x54r@yahoo.com >> hope this helps>> your friend Joe

You might want to slug your barrel as the bores vary quite a bit. My M-39 slugs @ .309 and shoots great with .308 bullets but my M-44 has a .313 bore and doesn't shoot .308's well at all. I like Speer 110 gr. h.p.'s over 52.0 gr. of H-4895 for a light load in my M-39.
