Canada to Ban Handguns?

Canadian Premier Dalton McGuinty and Toronto Mayor David Miller are calling for a nationwide ban on handguns after a recent brazen shooting left one innocent resident dead. McGuinty said he would call for a review in each Canadian province on what can be done to better fight gun violence and said he would not rule out the idea of an outright ban. “We have an important opportunity at this period of our history to have a decidedly different gun culture here in Canada than we do south of the border," McGuinty added. "We've got to renew our efforts to ensure we have in place all the measures on both sides of the ledger -- we've got to be tough on crime as well as tough on the causes of crime." John Tory, leader of the opposition party called this “basically a restatement of the status quo that still doesn't deal with the question of illegal guns being used by criminals to commit illegal acts. A more effective way to deal with guns is to have tougher sentences and stop letting people charged with gun offences back out on the streets on bail.” (Source: Vancouver Sun)

Typical, punish the law abiding with another gun law that doesn't do anything to the criminals.

Exactly! While the innocent give up their guns, who's gonna force the criminals to give up their illegal guns? Why punish the responsible people who took classes and passed shooting tests to be able to possess a gun?

Guns are not the causes of crime, human greed and stupidity are.

TX is the only state getting tough on crime by trying to push a bill that would allow the death penalty for sex offenders

Repeat violent or child sex offenders should be eligible for the death penalty! They forever change the lives of every one of their victims, and the sex part of it has nothing actually to do with sex at all in over 99% of the assualts. Rape is a violent assualt intended to demoralize and demean the victim, the penis is simply the weapon employed to destroy the one thing every woman believes is the one thing she always has control over and that is her sexuality and who she wants to have sex with. Serial rapists and child sex molesters need to be removed from society permanantly. IMHO but thats just me and it really wasn't so very long ago that rape WAS a capital offense.

I agree with you, but that could just be our Texan thinking.

+1!! I can't ever believe that these people can be rehabilitated. In fact, many statistics show that they can't. They are a different type of criminal, one that is sick and twisted in the grossest form and many of them admit while in prison that they WILL re-offend once they are released. But yet, lawmakers and (mostly) Democrats are convinced that we need to be concerned for their civil rights and do not give the public proper notification when sex offenders are re-released into an area. A town near me has two of them that we know of, both living near elementary schools... how can this possibly be ok???
