ezearln, sorry that was for B&R. not you.

I don't think a firearm of any caliber would have helped here.

1. the parents thought he was snatched, not draged off by a Bear.
2. Darkness was such a factor that even if he had a firearm he could have hit the child shooting in the dark.
3. the Bear was looking for a easy kill, more than likely old and or hurt in some way and like the tigres in idia, hunt man when they can nno longer hunt normal prey.

while this is tragic and may have been aviodable in otherway such as not keeping food in the tent I don't think that a firearm would have helped here. I do however think that we should be allowed to carry them on parks, national or state for occations where they could have helped.

Hey colt, the .50 Cal is a SASR. Not issued very often. And, if you would've served in the Corp as a sniper, you would've used an M40 series rifle.

i'm curious of the regulations at parks. i'm sure they are varied by state and federal?? i know guys that go up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (northern MN) that take handguns for protection from bear, coyote, and wolves. Can't and not supposed to are entirely different things, IMO...i'd rather not be bear food and break a rule than end up like this poor boy

B&R, I have supported you in the past, but it is time to let this one go. The man knows what he shoot and when. The shoots they are talking about are possible and probable with the right rifle and man shooting it. Let this post get back on track.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents of this victim. I don't think anything short of "Rambo" could have saved this kid. If the father had had a light, If the father had had a gun, If the Father was wide awake in the middle of the night when this all started, If the Father could have run 30mph to catch up with the bear, If they had not had food in the tent, If they had stayed at another campground he may be alive. Come on - no way to second guess anyone if you were not there. I for one am glad I wasn't. Or I would be asking myself - If.....

Posted this in the wrong place...
Far as I know you can carry them in parks, just not national parks or amusement parks. I found a lil bit about it.

Commissioners Court ordered on Tuesday the removal of signs banning legally concealed handguns in Harris County parks, after lawyers said the county could not enforce such a ban.
County Attorney Mike Stafford advised the court that the county has been violating state law by banning people with concealed handgun licenses from carrying their guns into parks.
Until now, the county has banned concealed handguns from its lands and buildings, including the County Administration Building on Preston.
Stafford said that a 2003 revision to the Texas concealed handgun law removed the county's authority to make such a sweeping ban.
The county continued to ban those with permits for concealed handgun from bringing guns to parks when high school, college or professional sporting events are held there, or into a courthouse, justice of the peace court, school or a place where a governmental meeting is being held.

I'm not sure about where this accident occurred, but I do know that in Maine, weapons are completely restricted from all state and national parks. Maine is usually good about gun rights, but for some reason they are harsh here. I guess they think this law will stop poachers?
