When it comes to length of service, innovation, ease of use, breadth of use, reliability, and other factors, the AK pretty much beats the Garand IMHO. I am taking nothing away from the Garand, but in this case the experts who ranked the top 10 got it right when the AK was ranked several notches higher than the Garand on the link I gave earlier.

No, the AK is NOT inaccurate. It it were so, they would not have been issued or produced for so many nations. They are decently accurate and do exactly what they were designed to do. They were not designed for sniping, just as the AR platform was not. They were designed for firefights, and in that they excel. Vietnam proved that.

We are getting hung-up on semantics - the original post said the greatest rifle ever. It did not say the "best rifle". To me that is a totally different argument. To me the "Greatest Rifle" would be a rifle that has had a "Great" impact on human history. That is the context in which I listed the AK-47. I will freely admit that even though I own a couple they are not my favorite rifle. I think it would be impossible to identify one "Best Rifle". Rifles are designed to do different jobs. So to I don't think it is possible to fairly compare rifles designed for totally different purposes. It may be possible to come up with like a "best in class" type thing, but what is the point. I love em all - well most of em at least.

Sharps Model of 1874. The gun that Really tamed the West. Without it, we would not be having this discussion. Also, one of the best looking, most accurate rifle made. Nuff said.

As I said before, the AK's only drawback is it's lack of range. Used in the proper setting, it is very accurate and ungodly reliable. |

I'm going with "that damn Yankee rifle you load on Sunday and shoot all week!" The Henry Rifle: Fact, Fiction, and History
...and I'm sure George Custer's opponents at the Little Big Horn would agree!!!
Although, other's choices(...Mauser 98, M1 Garand, M16, AK47) also have their place in the evolution of firearms.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Kentucky Rifle. After all, it was the rifled musket that rendered the Napolanic tactics used for 100's of years obsolete.

I agree with ding. The M-14. Almost everyone's arguing accuracy and reliability, the M-14 is very accurate and I've never heard of any reliabilty problems. I've hit coffee cans at 650 yards.

This will be my 100th thread. It is historical in nature and so is my answer, without reading the numerous threads pryor to this one. It is my fathers rifle, the M-1, period! It won WWII and I still enjoy shooting it. Now you youngsters on this forum can roll your eyes and make fun of the elders here, but we will go home with the same gal we took to the dance! It made sense back then and it still does today. Beats the Hell out of the piss ant .223! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Brother Bob

Howdy, my first post here: --- The greatest Rifle? --- It is the pre-64 Winchester Model 70. No question about it.

Another vote for the AK. I don't own, or want to own one but, many people from many nations do.

#1 Barret 82A1/M107 .50 cal
#2 M-40A3
#3 model 70 winchester vietnam era sniper rifle(Gunny Hathcock's weapon of choice)
For cicvilian use i would say #1 rifle either Savage 111, or 10fp .308 or 30-06
or remington 700 sps both around 450-750 dollars and deadly accurate i shot my 111 30-06 with an ncstar generic used scope at 600 yards with 12" grouping

For Civillian I'd say the Winchester Model 1894. First smokeless powder rifle.
Military bolt action would be the British SMLE.
Military auto loader is going to be the M-1.
Military selective fire is the AK-47/AKM

My personal opinion on rifles I've owned: Rem 700 and Mauser 98. Never should have parted with my Brno.30-06. Rifles I want: M70 pre '64 .270 and Weatherby Mk V .257Wmag.

what purpose would you need to be able to stretch out more than 200 yards for?(except for competition, but i'm not talking about that)
with that said i don't have much knowledge but i'd go with an M16 in situations where i wouldn't be crawling in mud or sand or something crazy like that and an AK47 if i would
