I have officially joined the ranks of proud mosin owners. yay fer me. its a 1943 izzy with a round reciever. good condish, no counterbore, purdy rifling, i think it was in storage somewhere, theres only a few nicks on the stock.

goin' shootin tomarrow, gonna try this piece of nice looking workmanship out

>> is there a reason they poured a gallon of oil on the sights, ive wiped it off 3 times now and i still havent gotten all the excess yet

Philip, that "oil" is called cosmoline and it's your best friend (it's also purported to have addicting qualities): Educational Zone #23 - Cosmoline Removal - Page 1

You need to disassemble your rifle and clean all the metal parts with solvent, especially the chamber, or you will end up with sticking shell casings. You don't necessarily need to clean the stock, but I'd suggest at least wiping it down with solvent (like I did). Once the rifle gets nice and hot, that's when all the cosmoline will start to seep out from where you may have missed it.

If you want a lot of good information on dealing with it, search for "Cosmoline" up in the search function at the top.

well i dont think i got all the cosmoline out when i went shooting, because the bolt was a little ( ) hard to yank up on a few of the rounds. the ammo i was shooting was brown bear 203 grains, it says non corrosive primed on the box, does that believable, or are they lying?

yes, the current manufactured ammo is supposed to be non-corrosive, its the milsurp ammo that is corrosive. as for the sticking I had the same issue with my M44, take a 20 ga shotgun brush and clean the chamber real well, it cleared up my issue.

I shoot corrosive mil-surp in my rifle, but even if I didn't, I'd clean it like I did. It's just good practice and it only takes an extra 5 minutes at the range to run some hot water through the bore, dry it, and put some water displacement in it or just do a quick cleaning and oiling.

oh yeah, the bang and the kick werent hardly as bad as some of you are making it sound like. I only after shooting it about 10 times decided to put in ear plugs. it seems to project the sound out more towards what you're aiming at.
to bad where im at rifle hunting isnt allowed only shotguns

Ifits a factory refub and you use solvent on the stock your gonna have a big mess of gummy crap!! wipe it off with something that wont melt the shelac!!As stated in the qute you do need to dissasemble the bolt and all and clean the chamber ..for a solvent I just use a good carb cleaner but I take the stock of the rifle first!!

Sorry marion, but when I used the Mineral Spirits on my shellac'd stock, it shined it up nice and gave the shellac a nice gloss finish. All I did was wipe it down to remove the cosmoline with a rag that had mineral spirits on it, I didn't soak it in the stuff.

Now, I wouldn't recommend something like acetone or carb cleaner to use on the stock, as those are rather harsh, but the mineral spirits work great.

OK Phillip, if what you are saying is that you want this thread to stop then I am just going to have to be defiant.

Because? I just picked up a 1937 Tula 91/30 in great condition! Bore looks great stock looks great. Everything looks great! Heck, I even got a pig sticker bayonet, ammo pouch, tools, sling and a cosmoline on my dress coat all for the same price!

I need to buy another card reader so I can download pictures. I would love to post them.

Whew am glad to hear that JAC!! Was just afraid he would think any solvent would be ok!!I guess I dont think of MS as a solvent just a thinner

Yeah, I should have clarified that when I first wrote it... back in July of '07.

Oh, and as a senior in a chemistry degree program, I can't help but think of mineral spirits as a solvent, as it's essentially "toned-down" acetone.

I am always afraid that when I give advise on how to do something someone will misunderstand my dumb explaination and ruin a good gun..I have been known to make dumb mistakes when writing things and had to go get the catsup!
