There are almost 100,000 gun dealers in the US

But in a 2000 report, ATF officials said that nearly 40 percent of all weapons traced by the bureau originated from just 332 gun dealers nationwide. That means that about one out of every three hundred of the nation’s gun stores supply nearly half of all weapons traced in connection with a crime.

An extreme example: over a five-year period, Eliot's Gunshop on the outskirts of New Orleans was the source of 2,300 weapons later linked to crime, including 125 murders.

Bloomberg is a jerk. His sting operations on out-of-state gunshops were wrong and illegal, not to mention stupid, and dangerous to law enforcement. But facts like those above were his excuse to act.

Here's a link to the MSNBC story: Small number of shops sell most crime weapons - Crime & Punishment - MSNBC.com

Read it for the facts, not the editorial or reporter's slant...

I haven't a care or concern for the slant on this story I will once again state that Bloomberg needs to and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for his illegal activities, had this been any one of us or any other citizen trying to point out a crooked firearms dealer in a similiar fashion we'd have been clapped in irons and buried under not in the jail. This is simply B.S. This SOB has violated federal law, not to meantion God knows how many state laws in his insane crusade. It is far past time he was tried , convicted and stripped of his position and incarcerated end of discussion , Dammit he ain't above the Law!

Never mind Bloomberg; maybe I shouldn't even have mentioned him. What can be done about rogue gun dealers, without endangering the vast majority of honest dealers and customers?

The dishonest/criminal ones should just like Bloomberg be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Most dealers are just like us Gun nuts who have a passion for the shooting sports the few that insist on criminal activity need to be removed and jailed as soon as they are positively identified.

The ability to actually have a FFL has gotten very hard. The number of FFL dealers has taken an extreme dive in the last few years.

have agents randomly attempt easily spottable straw man deals, and if they fail drop the hammer

but then the number of stolen guns would probably go up a little too, keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is impossible

The factory or seller does not have control over anything after the sell. Now if something illegal is done it's one thing but if the rules are followed then it is some others individuals fault.
They don't blame Ford/Chevy/Dodge for drunk drivers do they?

That's interesting facts. I assumed more criminals were getting their guns illegally. That's definitely not good press for us. I have also been wondering about how many people with CHLs commit crime....I'm sure that number's pretty low though since you have to go through the fbi ringer.

You can find those numbers for Texas at:

Texas Department of Public Safety - Courtesy, Service, Protection

I as at gun shop yesterday, and this fellow was talking to the counter man. Wanted to buy a 45, "got to be a 45 man" . When asked, he had no Texas drivers license, an expired La license, and a song and dance about "I get my new one in a couple of weeks, it'll be alright, I just need to get something now" He left empty handed. I know the counter man a bit, and he said you'd be surprised how often that sort of thing happens. He says they turn away lots of people, and quite a few on the phone call they are required to make. Having a CHL makes it a breeze, no wait for a phone call.

Guy has license; man walks off the street with clean record and wants to buy a gun and hands dealer money. Dealer says ????? "No I won't sell you because I have sold too many guns that wind up in crime"?

If you can prove that the dealer knowingly sold the gun with the intent of it being resold for street money then you can prosecute him. Simply saying "he should have known" doesn't cut it. How many on here are on a first name basis with their dealer because of how many guns you buy? Want your dealer to say "Hey you buy too many guns; I think you might be a straw buyer"?

A gun used in crime can be traced to the straw buyer and thus he can be dealt with. Maybe straw purchases should have a higher penalty?

The dealer can open himself up to all kinds of problems by denying someone a purchase that is legaly entitled to it. Loss of business, loss of revenue, Legal action etc....
