Ok just wondering what ya'll thought about the M44 on the subject of target shooting and the kinda distance it is accurate to. I am thinking that the ammo would also play a part in this so what kinda ammo do you use and how far can you manage to still get a good group?

the best group ive ever gotten was with my m-44 scoped using sellier and belloit ammo 0.942 in. @ 100 yds.
usually im happy if i can hit a 6 in.bulls @100 yds. using iron sights and milsurp ammo
i bought my mosins because they are cheap to shoot.
i dont bother with expensive ammo for these guns

most 7.62x54r is good to about 200 yrds max, after that it drops fast at 500 yrds there is usually almost 60" of drop. check out the ammo comparison charts at 7.62x54r.net. even the russian sniper , which is supossed to be the best drops 45" with the finnish m91 and 55" with the M44 at 500 yrds.

Yea that is what I tend to be seeing. I am wondering what it would take to push past 200yrds. That will come in time and obviously not with this rifle. I think this will be a good starting point and maybe in the fall I will get something alittle different. I would like to have a AR15 but I have no idea about the range they would have considering that they are firing a .223.
For a flatter trajectory, you need to go with a lighter-weight bullet going at a higher velocity. It won't have nearly the same terminal energy as the heavier bullet, but it will drop less distance over the same horizontal distance, since gravity works at a constant acceleration of 32 ft/s/s in the "down" direction, so the faster the bullet can cover the horizontal distance (i.e. faster muzzle velocity), the "flatter" the trajectory will appear.
Easiest way to do that would be to handload them. But, if that's not an option, find the lightest bullets you can, which I think are the light ball at 147gr, with the fastest muzzle velocity (which will also be the heaviest kick for that bullet weight).

Its been a while since I've shot my 223, but I believe I've got it set an inch high at 100yds for dead on at 200yds
I currently have a M44. This is my second M44. I agree alot of fun. I plan to really get my skill level up there and compete in Military Rifle Competition. I am also thinking of gettin a CETME
yup i agree get 1 now while there still cheap ........ i have 2, 1 pu sniper and a m44 carbine ..... good shtf gun aswell , rugged, tough as nails and it comes with a bayonet lol ....
My laminated M-44 w\2x20 scout scope shoots well within "minute-of-deer" out to 200+ yds. I've never shot it at paper over 100 yds but I put a nice buck down @ a measured 225 yds last season.
