Here's the scenario,1. I come home after five weeks on the road and look in my usual spot for my M-44 M\N and it's not there. I'm in a hurry to get somewhere, so I wait to call the cops. 2. My son, who owns a business, reaches under the seat for his Taurus PT-111 and finds nothing-he calls the cops immediately to report it stolen.
Reality: I return home to find my gun in a case that I hardly ever use and my son finds his pistol under the seat of another vehicle that he's driving teporarily.
What do you guys think is the proper reponse and how would you handle it?
toolman,It's impossible for an outsider to figure out this mystery. What is your thinking on this?I would definitely tell the cops, someone is playing Mickey Mouse with your guns, and keep the guns locked up tight when not on your person.
Do you guys live together? Sounds like it, but you do not say so. Did your son put the gun under the seat of the other car to have it and forget doing so? Sounds like coincidence to me. I sometimes misplace things, and by that I mean put them in the wrong place and then forget where they are. Then I find 'em and think. "Oh, oh yeah...". Unless some other family member was playing with them. Some youngster? If it were other than that I think they would be stolen, not just moved.

I would say your son should call the cops and tell them that it was not stolen after all. Then buy a safe for your long guns.
Then fuss at the wife for moving it in the first place - that is what I do. Funny thing though - that never really turns out too well for me. Maybe you will have better luck!
Gun locks are not useless as stated by Shaun. True they may not prevent theft of the objects in question but they sure as H--l may go a long way in preventing the theft "Oh h--l, these firearms are locked don't have the time to jimmy them." or an accident, left where "little hands" can get at them. I suggest you LOCK your guns and put them in a safe or a secure place and LOCK the safe or the secure storage area. I lock my guns and the area in which they are stored. Except at night when I keep my favorite shooter near the bed. The others are still locked and then the storage area is locked.
Never store your ammo with your guns and never keep a loaded or unloaded firearm in your truck, car, suv, or what-have-you when you're not useing the vehicle.
I should've been clearer, neither gun had been moved or touched by anyone else. I apparently put my M-44 in the case to free up space in the safe and my son had switched vehicles and moved his truck gun but forgot. He called the cops back to report it found. I'd just never dealt with a lost gun before and I'm glad I didn't call mine in. While my area is still pretty gun-friendly, I don't want to get on the radar for losing a gun. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me!
Maybe the signs of old age is creeping in on you and your son maybe just for got. LOL...A.H
Serious though I would be looking and figureing what the hecks going on. That is odd.
