Funny thing to me is when I worked patrol we were always getting calls from hysterical mothers (and occasional fathers) about snakes on their property they were unable to identify and wanted us (Police) to check out, so we always carried a grasping catch pole and snake hook in the Cruiser along with a heavy burlap sack, most times they were just rat snakes or grass snakes but too often they were cotton mouths, now in all them times I never saw the need to draw my service pistol to shoot one. Think this whole sad situation is simply extreme bad judgement by a cop who just wants to melt into the ground at this point. My prayers to all in this tradgedy. Peace upon the little boys soul and to his Grandfather.

Yeah, but you're a grumpy old man, JoeLee. You probably don't like anybody all that much...
Wrong troy2000,I've had more common people "help" me in my life than any cop.All cops are today are ticket issuers for the State to collect money for fines, cash registers for the State, say me.Even your LA cops today, are no more than babysitters for latino drug Ganges, and nowhere to be seen when you had the riots in LA.Cops a good source of money yes.But troy2000 love your cops no skin off of my nose.Donkin Donut regulators that's cops!

You remind me of a Maxine cartoon my wife has hanging up: "A National Grouch Holiday? What a stupid, lame, waste of time idea..."

agreed on the "What a stupid, lame, waste of time idea..." comment T2000. i have a family member as well as a few close friends that are cops. all are fine examples of people and credits to their jobs. now i find out i have been wrong all along. i have been "enlightened" that ALL cops are no good.
I'm not big on sweeping generalizations myself, Troy

Of course, the idea of the cartoon was simply that Maxine was being a grouch herself on National Grouch Day, thereby celebrating it in spite of herself...

oops, my bad. i was looking at it as a waste of time to continue the debate with someone who carrys a broom with them to the conversation.
hahaha i just remembered, my shooting buddy is into reptiles, and we have another friend who runs a reptile rescue, and my shooting buddy's 2 year old daughter likes to handle the various reptiles, so they let her handle the ones that aren't dangerous(they had a dangerous monitor escape recently, which is not good) and she did something one of the snakes didn't like and it bit her, and let go, but she didn't stop, so it bit her and didn't let go, then half an hour later she wanted to hold it again. the point of my story is, that type of snake must not hurt when it bites you.
but for those who may not know, if you or someone you're with ever gets bit by a snake, squeeze it's head, or hold it's head under water and it'll let go, if you pull the fangs will break off inside the person and have to be surgically removed, could be a useful tip

My wife owned and ran a pet shop for seven years with her mother, Cubbie, and according to her the tip about using water works on just about any critter. She probably can't count how many times she stuck her hand under a faucet to make some parrot, lizard or whatever let go.
Firstly though let me say that I'm by no means condoning or trying to lessen what happened to the boy and his family. That being said I've got a few other things to say. Whoever called the pd for a snake is an idiot, that's like calling a plumber when your electricity is messed up. Cops, for the most part, don't have any better idea about wildlife than the average person. Call animal control or better yet...just let the poor thing go about it's business, it's not after people and your house will be rodent free with a snake in the area.
Secondly, the grandfather isn't exactly blame free...why would he pull the kid closer to himself? Is he bullet proof? Maybe a better idea would have been for them both to hit the ground and start yelling.
Finally the cop...stupid, stupid, stupid....I'm not really sure what should happen to the cop. On the one hand he was probably acting in good faith and doesn't deserve to be fired/jailed but then again what he did was really really stupid. I guess all I can say is that I'm glad that I don't have to make that decision.
Before you tell me that I'm an idiot or that I'm trying to take the blame from the officer, remember I said that I am not condoning what the officer did or trying to cheapen the boy's life. I'm just trying to look at it from every perspective.
At least this one comes by his immaturity honestly, toolman; he's a teenager.
Cubbie, would you talk to adults face-to-face the way you're popping off to these guys? If so, your parents didn't teach you manners. If not, why do you think it's proper to do so on this forum?
No one's asking you to roll over and play dead; you have a right to express your opinion. But it doesn't hurt to show a little manners and a little respect to your elders while you're having your say. And you might learn a little too, if you pay attention to them.
My boys aren't saints, but I guarantee you they've never in their lives addressed an adult as rudely as you have in this thread. I also guarantee they'd never do it twice, if I knew about the first time.
i don't mean to be rude, but cops do have an impossible job, there is no way to stop crime, especially when as pred said, they are minutes away, and if you take away a cop's gun, you have a wal mart people greeter, maybe an old dude with a flashlight, or would meter maid be more cop-ly? i never said cops were completely useless, what i said is that they rarely stop crimes, and all they can do is try to find out who did it, and they are not successful enough to stop crime. isn't the reason behind most gun ownership police ineffectiveness? you cna't sit there and tell me "I own a gun to protect myself" and then say our police are effective, they aare as effective as they can be, but our rights limit that
also, the fact that you expect me to show you respect based on age and nothing else is the main reason that adults get on my disrespected list, when i first meet you i respect a teenager the same as a 50 year old, it's what you do after i've met you that determines if i respect you or not, i still respect everyone on here, but when you try to tell me age matters on how much i should respect you that pisses me off, the only way to validate the respect i give you is to respect me(is it really that hard?), which for the most part you have, so i do still have respect for you,

that's kinda what i've been saying, they way cops prevent crime is being a deterrent, the same way people greeters prevent theft by being a deterrent, i think i've finally found an effective way of verbalizing what i meant with that comparison

yup, realizing that crime happens is going to keep me at wal mart forever, which if you check out salaries of facility, and district managers is not bad, I wouldn't mind being at wal mart for the rest of my career, it doesn't take much to retire at 65 if you start saving while you're young, my current wage is enough to do that, obviously pushing carts is not going to work out for a permanent job, but i wont be pushing carts after i'm 21

I tried to add a reply testerday, but the hourglass turned for more than hour and I gave up.
My dad was a cop. Joined in '54, quit (retired) in '78 in total disgust.
There once was a time when cops were "Policemen". They were human beings and honest. You could get a 'break' but if you were seen again that night, you were arrested. You were, after all, told to "go home and park it". If there was a crime, they usually knew who to question about it. That's also back when nearly everybody carried guns on them or in their cars. Crime was rare. So was dope.
Then, the unglorius '60s happened. Life started changing for the worst. Kennedy was assasinated, Johnson created the monster called the "welfare state, got chickensh-t scared the chinese would overrun us in 'Nam and wouldn't commit to win, protests against everything, govt. stuck it's big nose up our @sses, 'pigs' gained unnecessarily in power and strength, "1984" went from a horror story to a guide for govt. growth, , clintonism gave credence to liberalism, and here we set, broken hearted, whiners reign supreme, real men are the underdogs, cops rule the coop.
And we set by and let it happen, shouted down by wimps, whiners, and closet communists.
The truth hurts.
(PS~ This is a lot more subdued that what should have been here yesterday.)
