Police officer shoots at snake...kills unseen 5 year old fishing with grandfather

After a few days of forced vacation, here ya go. I guess a baton to the head was just not enough. Officer or not, this is tragic, we were all taught at a very young age to never fire a weapon towards the unknown.

Noble boy killed by stray bullet

Associated Press - August 4, 2007 8:45 PM ET

NOBLE, Okla. (AP) - Officials in Noble say a 5-year-old boy was shot and killed by an apparent stray bullet fired by a police officer attempting to kill a snake.

Jack Tracy says he was fishing with his 5-year-old grandson -- Austin Haley -- yesterday evening when he saw the first shot hit the water near where they were standing. As he pulled his grandson to his side, he says a second shot hit the boy in the head.

Noble City Manager Bob Wade says police received a complaint last night from residents in a subdivision about a snake.

When officers responded, they decided to shoot the snake. A few minutes later, Wade says there was a commotion in a wooded area behind them where the boy apparently was hit by the stray bullet.

Austin was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wade refused to identify the officer suspected of firing the shots but says the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Unhappy

This is tragic! I was in Noble ,Oklahoma back in June. I was with my son-in-law, hunting for Rose Rocks. I grew up about 7 miles up the road in Norman.

Honestly, I hope this guy gets charged with Manslaughter. He's no better than a drunk driver. He was negligent and killed someone, an innocent child no less. I hope he has a fun time in jail, preferably in gen-pop with some hardened criminals that he helped put there.

As a guy with three grandchildren, this makes me sick. This was a tragic accident that never should've happened. I'll be praying for everyone involved.

I fished from the bank with my 6 year old grandson and 5 y.o. granddaughter last week at a small lake. I could not imagine anything more saddening to have one of them shot by a stray bullet, like the story relayed.

My prayers go to the families of all parties involved in this terrible tragedy.

A snake. Some wimp was afraid of a stupid snake? Wimp calls the cops who try to shoot the snake with a police pistol?? And a little boy gets killed by a stupid cop trying to kill a stupid snake with a stupid police pistol all because some stupid wimp was afraid of a stupid snake? The wimp should have got a ticket for wasting the cop's time. The cop should be fired and have his gun rights removed for his stupidity. The boys parents should sue the PD, the city and the wimp to bankruptcy (of the city, the PD and the wimp).
The snake was probably wondering what all the excitement was about and left on it's own, bothering nobody.

I don't think bankrupting the PD and the city will do the neighborhood and the other residents much good...when you bankrupt public entities, you're punishing the people they serve.

What happened to people using shovels to take out a snake? It's always worked for me. Saddest thing is, it probably wasn't even poisonous.

Not saying the guy wasn't an idiot, but there's a big difference between stupidity and murder, even when the outcome is the same. You can bet the dumb cop is as messed up as the family over this. I agree that he needs to be punished though ie: manslaughter (is there such thing as negligent\reckless manslaughter?).
