My brother has what he says is a 7.62x54 Springfield made for the Russian army during the revolution. Does anyone know anything about this rifle and what it may be worth?

Are you sure it isn't 7.62x51 Springfield made for the US army? Lol...I'm not doubting you, I've just never heard of such a thing...

I'm betting what he has is a Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54, made by New England Westinghouse or Remington-UMC. They were contracted for by the Czar's government, and many weren't delivered because of the Russian Revolution.

The N.E. Westinghouse Mosins are all marked 1915, even though they were made through 1918, while the Remington rifles were marked with the actual year of manufacture.

Also, Winchester made 7.62x54 lever-action M1895 rifles for the Russians between 1915 and 1917. As far as I know, that's about it for American long guns of that caliber, at least in that era.

A good Russian Winchester lever-action is worth some serious money nowadays; they're scarce. American-made Mosin-Nagants are pretty common.

Can you post a picture or two? That'll settle it in a hurry. I'd love to be wrong, and find out there ARE Russian Springfields...

I'll have to get my brother to send me some pictures. I've seen the rifle but didn't pay close attention. He says that it is marked as being a Springfield, and as being 7.62x54R. He lives in New Orleans, so we don't get together as often as we would like. But I will get to the bottom of this. More later.

No pics yet, but I do have further info. What he has is a Springfield mfg'd Mosin. I'm not sure exactly what model, but he has docs showing when it was made and where it was delivered. He says it even has original battle damage. More when I get it.

"Battle damage" could ultimately be storage or transit marks.

Good rifle though. Will definitely bring more than your average imported Mosin.
