Sell a gun to buy a gun...

Ok, this is the situation that I'm in...

Every year, I treat myself to a new firearm (usually right before the November hunting season). I am currently a college student, and as a result my income is obtained during the summer, with a few bucks here and there during the school year.

This summer has been pretty rough as far as work went. As a result, I have told myself that I should only spend about $300 on a firearm. When the time comes to make the purchase, I will be 21, which makes me think, handgun?

I've been looking at the old surplus handguns like the CZ-52 and CZ-82, but for the past year have been drooling over the XD's and M&P's. The problem is that the ones that I drool over will run me about twice what I have allowed myself to spend..

Soo, I got the idea to maybe sell an O/U shotgun that I purchased this past spring. I bought the gun because I planned on joining a trap shooting club, but that never happened. The gun is a Remington Spartan 310 12ga. I paid $300, but added extended chokes and a limbsaver recoil pad. The gun is mint, and only about 50 rounds have gone through it (it was cleaned every 25 rounds).

In short, I feel that I should be able to get my $300 back, which would give me enough for the handgun that I've been drooling over. The range that I just joined doesn't have a trap shooting area, but has an indoor and outdoor handgun range...

I guess what I'm trying to get at is...Could you guys ever justify selling a gun for another gun? I've always told myself not to do this, because I might regret it later on. The shotgun has served me well (for 50 shots of trap that is), and I was thinking about using it for hunting, but at the same time, I have a Mossberg 20ga 500 that I could use (It's a nice one too, made in the US).

I dunno...what would you guys do?

I use to trade, sell, & buy guns I wanted. I sold a lot of weapons I didn't like want or need for stuff I wanted or needed.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to get into trap shooting again...I've sort of fallen in love with benchrest rifle and action pistol shooting. I'll always have the 20ga for hunting, and my next shotgun will probably be a tactical one, which I will buy when I get my first house.

i would just go for a Walther P22, they are nice little guns, although i don't like that the hammer locks back every time you pull the slide back, and the only way to put it forward is to unload the magazine, put it back in the gun EMPTY, then pull the trigger, drop the mag, and reload it. if you want to carry one in the chamber you have no choice to carry it cocked, but i would not reccomend it for CC, if that is your intention sell the shotgun and get an XD. if you are 20 my guess is that you dont have much longer til you graduate so for plinking purposes it would be worth waiting for an XD

I used to trade them in all the time. Always lost money. You may recoup your $300 if you go private sale. Advertise higher so the buyer will feel good talking you down. He will try. So advertise higher. Read the thread about which gun we regret selling. Think about this.

You do not seem so sure about the whole thing. Do you really need to spend more than $300? There are some nice used .357's here in NH for that price. Shouldn't be too much different in Maine.

I shot an XD in .45 and did not like that Glock-like trigger. I could not hit anything! And I can hit with a .357. Neither could the guy who owned the gun. He sold it. My feeling on this, not Gospel. You may want to try one before you buy one. Be a shame to spend all that money and then not like the gun.

I was pretty accurate with the XD45 and the guy who owned the XD's wife has a smith and wesson .357 that i was also accurate with. but i cocked the hammer by hand every time, i wouldn't have been as accurate if i had to put energy into the trigger pull

I'm sure you can develop a knack for it. I can shoot a 1911 okay. I just didn't like that trigger...and I shoot double action revolver pretty well. I'm old and set in my ways. You guys are young. Still, if you can find somebody that has one, and he'll let you shoot it...

Bravo take a deep breath. Now sell the Spartin, get rid of it because as hunting season nears you probley will be able to buy one on sale a lot cheaper than you paid for yours. Buy the pistol you want. Everybody needs a handgun because were living in evil times. Read your news paper, read Chris story about what happened at a gas station. You can always get another shotgun later. Good luck to you...A.H

Hey Bravo...send a PM to Toolman. He mentioned the XD's in another thread, giving me the impression that he has one.

I trade and sell guns all the time. My interest change, a particular gun in some way Sucks, I find that my need for one gun out weighs my need for one I currently have (with no money avail.). So, I say sell it if you don't think you will be using it. You can buy another one of those pretty much anytime. Something you may want to think about is hanging onto the accessories that you bought - It likely won't make that big of a difference on the sell price (certainly won't get your money back), but if you do decide you messed up - you won't have to buy the same stuff twice when you buy another Spartin. You can always sell the chokes later.

Sell, cut your losses, and get an xD. You won't be sorry.

Many members have them here.
I love mine.

I used to buy and sell ipods like crazy. I would never have an ipod more than 3 months old. I started with one for free, sold it bought an even nicer one, sold it, bought the latest and greatest.
Most guns can be done the same way.

There are exceptions to every rule.

XD all the way. I have a CZ-82 and love it, but I would step up to an XD in a heartbeat.

When it comes to guns or tools, anything I ever let go of in my whole life had claw marks all over it. But that's just me...

I know a lot of people who sell guns to buy others as their interests change or they decide to trade up.. There are also the guys who trade in guns so often they might as well be renting them; one store owner told me he has a handful of customers like that who probably keep his business afloat.

Lol...well I don't think I'm that bad...This would be the first gun that I've sold in my life.

If I keep up at this rate, I'll buy 14 guns for every 1 that I sell

I do have a few guns that have sentimental and historical value that I would never consider selling, and then there is this shotgun that I bought for something that I will never do...

I'm also thinking that 10 years down the road, if I feel that I need another O/U, I could always go out and buy a Browning ..especially when my income is better

Lol, I kind of know the feeling. My Grandfather had a .270win Model 70 that he used to let me use. I hated that gun so much...the gun was probably fine, but I was a horrible shot with it. Long story short, he sold it, and as much as I hated it, I sometimes still wish that I had it.

I will probably regret selling the shotgun, but it's not something that I need right now..

Thanks for the plug TJ, but I don't actually own one at the moment (a situation I hope to rectify soon). My experience comes from shooting friends' and also renting them at a gun store\range up in Wi. when I pass through. I personally think they are one of the best all-around handguns on the market-even though I can't build grips for them!

i'm the same way. except for sometimes if i have a friend who wants something that i have and don't use i'll give it to them, but most things i have aren't worth trading in(looking around my room i have an R/C car that broke, and i haven't fixed it yet, and some video games that i don't use) so if i buy a gun that's not quite what i want i may be able to get enough money to be worth unloading it. maybe

as for tools, why buy anything without a lifetime warranty? and tools are something you'll always need
