Calmly quietly and with fact rather than fiction.... People who have many years behind them can tell BS from fact most times. You patience is the key to persuasion....
Remember always factual, something they can verify through an independant reliable source and always calm and measured

EZearl is right. The biggest problem with "anti-gun" people is their lack of education in the hobby and the B.S. they read about guns and hear on the news. Educating the masses is the key to our survival and our hobby's survival, not to mention our 2nd Ammendment Right. When Fred Thompson was asked about that right, he said, " People have the right to own weapons. I believe in our Constitution and the Second Ammendment. I don't believe in judges legislating from the bench. As far as I'm concerned, there is no gray area here!"

Hmm, hold the 2 up and say "This one is a 9mm." and then "And, this one is a .223."

Actually, when I explain anything to someone who doesn't understand or know much about it. I try to use metaphors.

Often when talking about computers, I will relate it to how a car works, or a watch or something.

Just gotta find what you can relate it to.

I showed a guy at work a picture of my new 9mm Tokarev, and he said, "what is it? One of those Desert Eagles?"

He lives by brand names. Everything he buys, from his cookware to his beer to his newest off road toy, is whatever he's heard talked about the most lately.

And there's no point in talking to him, because he already knows everything...

if it is someone i care about i will make it as simple as i can .
otherwise i will start using technical jargon even I dont know what it means.
this is the LMNOP pistol which fires the 30-0678 round

I avoid talking to the uninformed unless they have a serious question and a respectful tone. Then I answer seriously and respectfully. If antis harass me, I quietly inform them that if I ever see them in mortal peril, I will be sure to keep my gun to myself and let them solve the problem by themselves. I tell them that the same goes for their children. They usually follow that up with an impassioned "Die a victim rather than shoot speech" and I say "Good for you!"

I think the very first thing you should do in that kind of situation is praise the person for even asking the question; too many times people are comfortable in their ignorance and don't want to know the truth. Starting off with something as simple as "I'm glad you asked..." is a great way to impart to the person that they've done a good thing in trying to learn.

In this specific instance, it might have helped to related the metric dimensions of the 9x19mm Luger round she mentioned and the 5.56x45mm round. That way, you can tell her that the first number means the diameter of the bullet (which isn't the same as a round/cartridge) and the second number means the length of the case without the bullet inserted. Then explaining that the .223 is just the Standard (as in Standard vs. Metric) conversion of the bullet diameter and is referred to as .223 Remington as it's full name.

Now, maybe your Gram's is more knowledgable than you think and she was wondering if it was an AR-15 9mm carbine conversion. *Chuckle*

I try to keep my gun discussions with non-gun people short and to the point. My wife tries really hard, but if I go on too long she starts looking around a little. She gives it her best shot though, and I love her for that. And she's not against shooting one of my .22s every once in a while.

Simply and politely give them the facts without being too technical, you don't have to go into great detail because if they are unfamiliar with guns in the first place you will only confuse.

Showing the ammo side by side is a good one but explain that it is simply about bullet diameter whether it is in milimeters or inch, if you go into all the different rifle cartridges you'll just lose them.

Most importantly talk with them, not down to them, don't be know-it-all, if you don't know the answer to a question be honest and say so.

Well, I get it a lot as a gun sales person. I like to show them the ammo side by side, show them two guns that fire the rounds, and if I can tell them something about each round. It gets interesting trying to explain to a person why a 9mm and a .45 are not "really the same thing."

Now think about this for more than a second. Who was trying to supress the laughter?? Maybe Grandpaw and Grandmaw were sniggering about your .22 cal 'rifle' among themselves. They no doubt know what a .22 is and to think that you bought a .22 cal ugly black plastic rifle 'for fighting in a war' was quite comical. And maybe they knew you can get a 9mm AR, too.
They probably lit a joint and got a rollicking case of the hee hees after you left knowing that only a fool would go to war with anything less than .30 cal.!
Heee Heee!

Thank you for that one, BFRANKlin. It's sending me off to bed in a good mood in spite of the minor irritations out there..

I usually don't talk to the anti's,they talk to me.
I don't have much use for folks that don't want some thing, but want to make sure you don't have it,to the point of claiming they would see their whole family slaughtered before they would have a gun in the house.
Just plain stupid IMO!

If they want to learn about guns, I do the best I can, so they go away understanding what it's function is. I would rather have them educated on what it is they are talking about than blowing smoke.

i've never really gotten why they like 9MMs so much, but it doesn't really matter

I don't get it either.

<BEWARE, lyrics from rap ahead.>
Drake "If I got my nina you know i'm strait trippin"
Snoop Dogg "Pop goes the nine"

I mean c'mon, I never here them say thirty-eight or forty when gangsters use those more often.
