I don't know, I don't know what a 91/30 is capable of from the factory. I mean, they took the best examples for sniper use, but still, could those hold up to the .308's we have today? I'm just saying that a 1000 yards from worked a Remington take skill.
There is a lot on the web about Zaitsev but I saw nothing about long range.However with both the .308 and 7.62mm by 54mm running about 2900fps with a 150gr bullet, and the only drop table I found showing with a 200yd 0 a drop of 8.3 for the 7.62+54 and 7.8 or more for the .308 or 762+51 I would think they would be very similar in trajectory. sam.

I think one thing that contributed to his impressive record was the fact that they had a lot of targets to shoot at. Plus, not too sure the russian army cared whether their soldiers got any rest or not. Stay in combat for a couple years and the totals rack up pretty quick or you go home in a box.

Probably his Stalingrad action was at fairly close ranges and depended
heavily on the art of moving into position, taking cover, then
waiting for the opportunity to present itself.
I would be very interested in information as to the quality of his scope
and power of same. It might provide a basis for estimation as to what
a person could expect performancewise from his weapon.
One point to consider - an unsuspecting human walking toward a sniper
allows for a great amount of vertical bullet drop that will produce a fatal wound especially in a situation such as the Russian front where the Germans increasingly had less and less access to quality medical care and evacuation of seriously wounded soldiers.
To put the vertical drop into another context - one might put the crosshairs on the forehead yet the bullet could be fatal to a German
soldier all the way down to the femoral artery of the thigh. That is a very large up and down area when measured if you are walking toward a sniper
thus allowing for a very long distance shot if your optics were of good quality.
Remeber much of his and other russian snipers deployment was in very urban bombed out areas. Building to building fighting and exstreme CQC one of the reasons the highly inaccurate Russian PPSh Submachinegun was so brutaly effective as well as a close sniper support. Id not be very suprised if it was found that the average WW2 russian sniper didnt have to take more then 150 meter shots.

150 METERS???!!!!! Vassili? RUBBISH!! Our famous hero Vassili Zaitzev would not lower himself to a shot less than 1000 meters! What would his friends think. That would be cowardice! I am sure that if some hostile threat were less than that he would politely ask them to move farther away to save his reputation. Please do not destroy my idol worship with the facts!
