One word...

DON'T.

You want an AR with a chrome lined barrel. And, do NOT let the people selling Oly Arms tell you, "oh, the chrome's in the steel, it's just as good."

Of COURSE, there's chrome in the steel. It's Chrome-Molybdenum alloyed.

You want to spec out a chrome lined barrel.

I can't find that particular model you're talking about.... Plus I don't want to spend more than $700 as a new shooter.

Sounds like a really good .22 long rifle is where

you need to start. Later a .223 varmit barrel bolt action would pretty much be recoil free to your shoulder. Then you might wish to move up to a .243 bolt action with a varmit weight barrel. This is just a little push to the shoulder.

Anyway, you are wise to take the recoil factor into consideration as developing good shooting skills matter most.

Marker, it's not a model. Olympic Arms does not sell chrome lined barrels or chambers.

A suggestion--buy a complete lower, and then buy the upper of your choice. Make sure to specify that you want a chrome lined barrel or chamber.

Well, you have lots of choices. Google the following:

Bushmaster
Armalite
Stag Arms
DPMS

or you can look at:

Midway USA

or maybe Gunbroker to check it out. You might even save a few bucks.

Whats so different about pre-ban models anyway?

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (1994-2004) alsp known as the "Clinton Ban" prohibited production and importation of:

Semi-automatic rifles with: folding stocks, bayonet mounts, flash suppressors, threaded barrels, grenade launching ability or pistol grips. Magazine capacity was limited to 10-rounds (unsure of that one)

Semi-automatic pistols with: magazines that attach outside the grip, threaded barrels, flash suppresors, shrouds that can be used as a grip.
Magazine capacity was also limited (again I think it was 10 rounds)

Semi auto shotguns with: folding or telescopic stocks, pistol grips, detachable magazines. fixed magazine capacity was limited to 5 rounds

So if your weapon was made or imported during those ten years it was held to those standards. Because we all know my pen is responsible for my spelling mistakes.

if you need a good example try looking up the H&K G36 and the H&K SL-8.

hope that helps

Thanks for all the info! I already looked it up though. The K16 from Olympic arms is LEGAL, the dealer just has to keep the 30 round mag. NJ only allows up to 15 rounds.

Do I have to stress about getting a chrome barrel? I was just going to buy the AR 15 K16 somewhere and call it a day...

Does anyone really think I could do a lot better building my own? If so, please post links so I can build it . I don't know where to get an upper or what kind to get.. I really don't want to spend more than $700.

What about for sights? I'll be getting a flatop... Is a red dot sight decent for a new shooter?

Okay, I think I changed my mind again... I'm going to build it!

Del-Ton, Inc. AR-15 Rifle Kits - 16"

Which rifle kit do you suggest?

They are all the same price..
