45LC-Good Bear Defense?

I was thinking about purchasing a Taurus "Judge" revolver chambered in 410 and 45LC for a snake charmer and black bear defense while in the woods. I was wondering if the 45LC would be adequate for protection against black bears.

Thanks, Aub.

I'd say the .45LC would be fine, but I wouldn't get the Taurus.

Go for a Ruger Blackhawk ( Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. ) and load her with these: http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunitio...heavy45260.jpg

You can also shoot .45colt cci shotshell out of it. It's a great gun, because it is capable of firing the high pressure rounds, while the taurus, I'm not sure.

I agree with Bravo on the selection. Taurus seems to have sketchy quality control. Many members here have given very different reviews of Taurus. Some of the dealers in my area will not carry them. Go to handgunreview . com and look at the reviews. They are all over the place. That tells me there are QC problems in Brazil.

In his book "Sixguns" the late Elmer Keith told the story of a backwoods type that successfully defended himself and his horse from a bear that was preparing to attack. He used a single action in .45 LC. It worked.

I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk and I have a couple of Taurus's. I like to shoot 'em all. If I had to choose one to confront a bear with make no mistake: I'd grab my Ruger every time.

I like the Ruger Blackhawks, but I want a double action. I also liked the idea of using 410 shot as a home defense weapon. I don't think that a 45 shotshell would be as effective at this. I have heard the same things about Taurus' "sketchy" QC but I have no personal experience with them. From what I have read, they seem to have good customer service though.
