the police -to me- should train with their new pistols. id hate for them to hit me when they're aiming for somebody else . i think it should be hard to qualify . i mean untrained police with guns that sorta scary

They need .38 revolvers like the S&W heavy barrel Model 10 in standard .38 Special caliber. That would help them qualify. Offer regular or large target grips.

I watched a highway patrolman teach his daughter to shoot in about two hours. They were next to me at a public range one afternoon. I was amazed. She arrived as a really lousy beginner and when she left she could hit silos at 25yds everytime.
I once shot next to an LEO that could not hit with her issue 9 mm. I don't know how she qualified. I know that a lot of people take me to task over this, but I think that LEO's should have stuck to .38's and let the officer choose his grips and whether he wants standard velocity or +p ammo.
NYPD's famous stake out squad and its magnificent gun fighter, the late Jim Cirrillo, used Model 10's, and they worked. If I need more than six shots I am probably not going to be able to solve the problem. If I need more than six shots I had better be behind cover to reload. If I need 10-14 shots and I am out in the open...I am already dead.

I made this point on another thread referring to this and I will say it again, it isn't the weapon, it isn't the shooter it IS the quality and competancy of the shooting instructors. Three weeks is MORE than enough time to take a raw student recruit and run them through safety, nomenclature, shooting fundamentals, rules of engagement, employment tactics and tecniques, dry-fire drill, basic marksmanship and Practical Pistol Combat courses and retain a high level of successful graduates.
It is immaterial what weapon is employed. If the teaching staff hasn't the skills themselves to both teach and coach and outperform every student on the line they have no business teaching anyone engaged in ANY Law Enforcement capacity PERIOD!

This is true EZ. I have never instructed in an official capacity. That said, I know what it looks like to be properly trained individual, I are one. The trainee has to have thier head screwed on straight as well.
Jerry in my career I have taken Lord knows how many hundreds over the span of my career absolute know nothing citified recruits that had only ever seen a gun on television, and country boys assuring me they already knowed hows to shoot cause Granpa taught em and, began the process of screwing their heads on both straight and tight, our motto was if you ain't better than your students at this you need a new job. Teaching them everything I pointed out on my previous post here. Getting the student motivated and in step is another crucial part of any good firearms instructors position description.

Of course then again helping to put some of the more nerveous types at ease over holding a pistol for the first time in their lives is also another skill one must master. LOL

The reason is that the Canadians are NOT familiar with guns at all. I have Canadian friends ( I live 10 miles south of the border) that don't even know what an AR 15 is !!!??? Handguns are especially foriegn to them. They've been led a sheltered life. Poor people....
Canadians are peaceful citizens firmly believing that guns are dangerous, therefore no need for them to have hazardous items that may hurt innocents. Just like the Mother country. There is no crime in Canada, its the yanks the one with rampant crime due to their gun loving people and outdated "Constitution"
Really? A LEO friend just let me read a book about the Hell's Angels. It included quite a bit about those fun loving, non-violent Canadian Angels Chapters and their murderous natures!

Coupal said the 25-metre precision shooting requirement is unrealistic under border conditions. "That's where we're losing most of our people. It's physically demanding on them."
I wonder what they mean by 25 meter precision shooting requirement? 10 holes in the same hole.
The instructor is very important but the student needs to have the desire.
"It's physically demanding on them." would love to shoot enough that it became physically demanding on me. Dear GOD give that opportunity to me.
