Winchester Wildcat .22 Bolt-Action rifle

From what I've read about this rifle it is made in Russia, reliable, not finished that well and is very accurate.

Does anyone have one of these and how much work would it take to smooth out any objectionable finish.

Seems to me a rifle that shoots reliabably and is highly accurate should make a great utility rifle that you can throw in the pickup and use without worrying about hurting the pristine finish of the high-priced guns that people buy and seldom shoot.

Whatcha think?

Tool Marks. I did a google on "Winchester Wildcat .22 rifle test"

All of the test reports remark about how well it shoots but then make mention of it not being the prettiest Winchester ever made.

I'm just wondering what the problem is because ugly doesn't matter if it's a good shooter.

Guns on display need to be pretty.

I haven't seen one, but most rough finish can be remedied with a few bucks and a lot of elbow grease.

I've seen the Russian original, and it is indeed 'rough'. But it is also a very good shooter! So you'd pay a few bucks more for the Winchester name stamped on it.
If I luck up on either one (the Russian or the Winny), I'll snap it up.

Finish we dont need no finish

Well I just bought one. But mione is the Russian version Not a Winchester version. I bought it becasue I really liked the finish, as well as the others in the shop.
Mine is an Orange color, and the actual finish I find not fault with at all. Clear coat is a clear coat of something. It is smooth and like I said I bought it becasue of the color ( And the Price too of course - Under $200.00 ). But I have to wait 9 days now to pick it up.

I understand they are made in Russia as a T+N label. The parts are smooth and nicely fit. It has not play in any of it and the actio is very smooth. After a few rounds it may change. But I think it will be a great little gun. Like I said all of the people clerks and customers liked it too.

If that is what they mean by the finish? I have seen pictures of some Winchester Models that are not so orange in color, and I have also seen pix of others that are Orange too. So I am not sure if it was to be as Orange as it turned out or if others refinished it and darkened it to make it not so bright?

I hope this sheds some light on the problem..

While I have your attention

While I have someones attention....

Can anyone tell me how I can find out exactly who makes this gun. Like I said, I was told by the gun shop that it was a T+N Gun. That is what was ont he barrel as well. I will not have it for 9 more days so I am looking to find out any info on this gun before I pick it up.

Thanks,

Thanks,
This may be a little late, but they are made by TOZ (Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod) based on their TOZ-78.
I've been very happy with mine.

Greg
