Two German shepherds, 1 red and the other white with black. Saiga is 2 1/2 years and big, good with kids but gets pissed off if he knows someone does not belong in his territory. Reddog is 9 years and is a food eating poop factory that is a real teddy bear and good with girls. He suckers them into giving him food and attention like his owner. Got Saiga from a friend who found him walking on the road. Reddog from some people who found him wondering the woods and already had 2 dogs and could not keep him. Both knew a sucker when they see one. Grew up with outside watchdogs and now cant see living without them in the house. Dont trust people that dont have pets of some kind. How old they are is judged from what the vet told me from when I got each one.

My son got a b-day present today. My mom and dad got him a German Shepherd/Border Collie mix. He is 9 weeks old, havent thought of a name yet. Any suggestions? If my boy calls him something besides kitty thats what it will be but its not looking to promising.

My dog (I mean 1 of our family dogs) is a Daschund. He'll be 1 yr in March. He is our only male dog. Plus he is the one I picked because we bonded so well. He is fast as a rocket and smart as a whip. How can I get him used to guns and start him on hunting small game? Any tips?

1 female Alaskan Malamute, have raised them for years and you will never own a Malamute, you will ONLY share the same living space. She is 130 pounds and her size and appearance scares people, she is wonderful watch dog, she will just sit there and watch.

To do it properly, IMHO, it will take two people. I'm going to assume you are going to use a shotgun so the first time out you are only going to fire one shot. You are also going to need your dogs favorite toy.

Put at least three hundred yards between the gunshot and dog. Before firing the shot get your dog all wound up playing with his toy. What you want is to have him totaly focused on the toy. Work out some kind of signal so that your helper will know when to shoot. Turning my back to the helper works best for me. Now watch the dog closely to see how he reacts to the shot. If he flinches or cowars in any way give him a week to forget about it and try again at a much greater distance. If he runs toward your helper to investigate, ya' got it made. Do this as frequently as possible untill he starts to ignore the shot then you can close the distance by small increments.

Whatever you do, don't expose him to a high volume of fire at close distance. It just make me sick when I see people take a dog to the trap range to "condition" it to gunfire. Many good dogs have been made gunshy when they would/might not have been otherwise.

Now now, let's not turn anti doxy here guys. I don't own one personally, but Dachsunds (officially designated as hounds) are bred to do what I believe is called, 'going to ground'.

Their shape is perfect for wiggling down rabbit holes and flushing out small game. It's instinctive with them. Do some research on the AKC website.

Daschund is actually German for badger dog. IMHO it's a rather fiesty critter that would go to ground for one a them nasties.

I mean unless you train them they're not good for much but then again neither are any other dogs without training so i take that back.

Perhaps the toughest small breed I've seen is the Jack Russell Terriers. A buddy has two of them, and they are like run-flat tires. They keep going under the nastiest circumstances.

We lost our dog of 13 yrs in july. We now have a weimaraner. Got him at 7wks old he is now about 8 months old and learning fast. Other than size he is great with kids and also starting to hunt for us.

I have a 9 year old Ausie mix, not sure what he is mixed with but he has short corse hair and weights in at around 90 lbs and his name is Nick.

Im thinking about getting another dog, maby a German Shepherd or another Australian Shepherd. Not sure yet, need to see if the land lord will approve of another dog in the house first.

He is a good pointer/flusher, not so good at retrieving, its more retrieve followed by a game of keep away/chase the dog.

Any of you guess what his second breed is, his first is Brittaney that's the easy one.
