Marlin makes lever action 30/30's that have receivers pre-drilled.
If I were you, I would seriously reconsider drilling the receiver of that Winchester. it's going to kill the value of the gun...probably so much that you'd not lose any money if you decided to buy a Marlin instead of drilling the receiver.
It's not my gun, but if he really wants it done, a decent gun smith should be able to do it with little problems. A lot of people have done it before (my grandfather has his dads 30/30 winchester that had its receiver drilled, and it's really a shame).
It's kind of along the same idea as those who want to drill the receivers of their 1903's and Mauser K98's...I really don't understand it. I have a 1903 that has had its receiver drilled, and I try to comfort it, but it knows that it's different from other 1903's...
If you really want a scoped gun, check out some Savage or Remington bolt action rifles.
Or, drill the 30/30.
Also, there may be a way to mount a scope without drilling the receiver, but it's going to be pretty unreliable.
older model 94's require a side mount base, no hole drilling, weaver makes one of the critters for the life of me after working 13 years in a gun shop doin general gun repair i have done lots of them but can't remember the base no. if its a newer one there are holes on the top where the bolt slides back where you can top mount one check weavers site out
It takes the weaver 3B side mount base
and the weaver 49350 side mount rings , hope this helps as long as its not a pre64 winchester 30/30

FWIW, the Weaver mount actually mounts the scope to the left of the bore to avoid the ejecting brass on non-AE guns. My father-in-law has one and I can't stand it. Being off-center makes the point of impact change if you are shooting at any distance other than what the scope was zeroed for. I'd look into an XO Systems scout mount instead. My Win '94 ejects brass on the top side which would create problems if a scope was added. Plus, I enjoy using iron sights for that rifle. Furthermore, I want that rifle to stay lightweight as it was intended by it's designer.
I have a 94 with the base mounted on the bolt and uses a Beemans number three scope which allows plenty of room for spent shell ejection. I have often thought I would try one of my small red dot scopes to see how that would work. While I think of it some might ask how I did the work. Taped the bolt and mounted a weaver base. You might have to tighten the rails but don't over do it.
