I need help with my novel

I want my protagonist to have a gun that is stronger than the standard issue pieces given out to cops (9mm glocks?). I first wrote that he had a .45 Desert Eagle(cuz it's f*ckin' sweet), but then that he had a S&W Model 29 double action .44 Magnum Revolver with an 8 and two thirds inch barrel. This novel takes place in the late 70's early eighties. So could you tell me what kind of gun, model, would be appropiate and what were the standard issue guns back then. Thank you very much.

Well, I posted the same questions on Yahoo answers and got some great responses from guys who weren't assholes. I thought I'd come here to get it strait from the gun nuts at first, but if everyone is like you, well, I'm all for gun control. You're a dick.

Dude, he'd just messing with you. Holy hell...

We like to kid around a lot on here. I'm pretty sure you won't get too much help though after a post like that. Me personally, I wouldn't even know where to start with what was around then, but would imagine most police used .38 revolvers. A .44 mag revolver would be a good bet, but again, I have no idea as to make or model.

Please be more respectful on our forums. As a writer, you should be able to pick up on the difference in a comment made in jest and someone being serious.

haha wow, he probably just joking around. jumping to conclusions is not a very healthy thing to do. thats a little harsh if one guy is a jerk to say its time for gun control. early 70's no Glocks, I don't think the desert eagle was either. if you do a magnum you will sound a lot like dirty harry. I think it should be a 1911, and who says he would only have a handgun. give him an M14, haha. I will want to read your book when your done, keep me posted

How 'bout a .475 Wildey Mag.? They were made starting in the early 70's up throught the 80's, so they would be correct for the period.

My book is not about guns. It's a minor detail. I just wanted to get that part right. I am not negotiating. Is there anyone on this forum who is willing to help a brother out. Would you have even hesitated to help if I had not mentioned a novel? What a bunch of dickheads. I would not pay a message boarder for "technical assistance".

In the late 1970's into the early 1980's most law enforcement agencies carried revolvers, usually chambered for either .38 special or .357 magnum. Your bad guy could carry a .44 magnum or a Model 1911 .45 semi-auto. If you want to go retro he could carry his Granddaddies old .44-.40 or .45 single action Peacemaker from the old west. According to Wikipedia the first patent for the Desert Eagle was applied for in 1983 and a second one in 1985. According to a second site the Desert Eagle wasn't available to the public until 1985 (see link below).

Desert Eagle Facts

You might also want to note that the Desert Eagle is an Israeli manufactured pistol.

You can simply acknowledge me in your book as Dallas from the G&G forum. And please let me know when you publish so I can get a copy of the book.

Gunne, may I recommend you get the chip off your shoulder? no need to use such strong language here, nobody meant you any harm. As for the answer to your "question", I would go with the S&W Model 29

I believe you were already for gun control and only wanted to get someone to tell what gun would kill people the best.I dont hunt people.I hunt varmints, game animals, and paper targets. Most any firearm can and is used in these pursuits.Take that to your anti-gun meeting. sam.

In the small town in PA where I lived at the time the police carried S&W revolvers with 4" barrels. I do believe that they were Model 10's. They were .38's and if I remember correctly they used standard velocity .38 special catridges with 158 grain round nosed lead bullets. Also, speed loaders were available at this time, as I carried two for my Model 36 in the late 70's. If you need help with the speed loader, let us know.

I don't think I want to include too much gun jargon, but thanks.

After that diatribe gunnewb, I wouldn't give you the time of day! First impressions count and your first is for the birds or gun grabbing liberals; your pick.
We had a poster who wanted someone from this forum to give him a gun for free!
well needless to say, we ain't heard too much from him lately.
by the bye I'm a writer too, a poet by trade, and very disappointed to have seen your post(s).
