Ive been shooting full metal jackets of pretty much any brand and was wondering, I found some jacketed high power +p ammunition for my p89 9mm in Cheaper Than Dirt magazine and wondering if anyone had any input on recoil differences, I know +p (more powder) but how much should I expect, will it alter my accuracy much or is it a waste of time buying them and, do you think they are that much better?
It isn't jacket type that determines recoil - it's the weight of the bullet relative to the powder charge.
The hot JHP bullet is usually lighter, and with a heavier powder charge - thus, more velocity. A lighter bullet usually means lower felt recoil, but increasing the charge for more velocity brings it back up.
The biggest difference in types will be penetration - the JHP doesn't go as deep, but does more damage.
The FMJ could penetrate lighter body armor, that would stop the JHP.
Gunney, the JHP is a better choice for self-defense and home use as the FMJ tends to poke small holes and keep going. Recoil between the two is going to be minor, if any in a P-89.
