I've been having a terrible time finding large rifle primers. I've checked every gun store I can think of for weeks now and about all any of them have is a ton of shotgun and pistol primers, few small rifle primers, either no or limited regular large rifle. I can't find winchesters anywhere. Maybe a packet or two of CCI and that's it, but CCIs don't work right for my mosin (they just push the bullet into the back of the barrel and dump the powder failing to light it, which relates to my next paragraph). Is anybody else having trouble finding them? The guy at one store blamed it on the war leading to a shortage.
One thing all the stores seem to have is plenty of magnum rifle primers though. Since I also can't seem to find a thread about these, I ask: how different are these? Are they "hotter" as in temperature, or as in they push harder? Do they actually make a difference in cold weather like they say? Do I haveto use less powder with magnums? It seems that CCI recommends magnums for ball powder, would that include the 4895 for my mosins? Would that be the reason for my plain CCIs failing to light the powder about 10% of the time, and seeming to not work too well the rest of the time?
Yeah that's a lot of questions, but I hope somebody can give me some insight. Maybe I should just go for the magnum primers while I'm still able to find even those.
OK I found large rifle primers for those who need or want to know. CCI - 200 1000 pk. 24.04 CCI - 250M - 1000 PK. 25.89 Winchester #7 - 111 1000 PK. 21.15 I dont know if you have looked on line or just local. Midway didn't have or Midsouth I found this site by chance from the Handi-Holics. I hope this helps you out
When switching to magnum primers. If you are loading low capacity casings such as .223,.22-250,.243,.308 and such, reduce by 1.5 gr if under max and 1.5 to 2gr if loading max..If you are loading high cap.casings such as .220swift, 6mm rem,.25-06,.30-06. reduce load by 1gr if loading under max and 1.5 if loading max.Almost all mag loads are given with mag primers.look in the load book for what primer they specify or if you have been using standard primers reduce by 1to1.5gr.They may not come out exact in fps but you wont be able to tell.I find mag primers a little more consistant but they are a lot harder on primer pockets.Dont be afraid to use them as they dont change cup pressure enough to get anywhere near the safe pressure zone. All they are really talking about is when you are using maximum loads they might go over SAAMI specks and pressure problem may become aparent.I have found they rarely do. samuel.

I've seen primers online, but hazmat shipping costs more than 1000 primers does. I'd have to buy a huge ammount of them.
My load book doesn't list primer types for 7.62x54r. I don't think it does for any type. It's the lee book and it's data is exact reprints of Hodgdon's online data. And the other books in the store I looked in had either none or almost no data for it.
The data I have says about 43-46gr h4895. I've been using 44.

I order a lot of other things with primers and powder offseting hasmat and shipping. sam.
Haven't had any 7.62X54R experiance yet but I use H4895 in my 45-70. Use standard CCI large rifle primers and never had any problem. H4895 isn't a ball powder, it's extruded (little rods). Also use CCI regular large rifle primers with H335 for the hotter 45-70 loads. H335 is a ball powder yet works fine with the std. primers. Have you checked your primer flash holes? Sounds like something is getting in the way of good ignition.
Around here (Indiana) is large pistol primers that are in short supply. Small pistol, large and small rifle primers are everywhere. We got tons of Winchester and CCI. Federals are hard to find, especially in large pistol, non-magnum that is.
