Tell me what you think about this

Olympic K16 16" Bull Barrel Rifle

Would this be a decent investment with a nice red dot?

I really want a ar-15, and I've heard nothing about Olympic arms

I have read more good than bad. They are made about one hundred miles from me. I want to go up and check out the plant some time. They may be my next buy if I can get a 20-24" in 6.5g. To me, that seems like a great price for that well of equipped carbine. I think buying a complete upper and lower from them, you shouldn't have any problems.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of them, but the ones I looked at seemed pretty much like every other AR. I really like DPMS which you could get for about the same money. I don't know about the 16" bull barrel though. I have never been able to figure that one out. A little short for a long range carbine and a little heavy for a tactical type carbine. I have a 16" AR, but it is set up as an M-4 with an aimpoint. My advice would be to go with a lighter M-4 configuration if you want to put the red dot on it. I think you would be happier. See this link (it had a removable carry handle) DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories.

+1
The 16 inch and bull barrel really don't go together IMHO. It should be more accurate than a standard carbine, but to get full accuracy out of a bull I would think it needs to be 22-24 inches. The bottom line is it's your gun, make the way YOU like it.

I have seen 16" bull bbl,s at the range where they were shooting 100yds to 200yds and with target scopes, making 1 hole groups even at 200yds.(under 1/2").This was slow fire. But you are talking reddot,a hunting sight system so I take it you are going to do some fast shooting.(spray&pray).A bull bbl might help on barrel flip so you might do very nicely but the cooldown would be long I would emagine.A lighter bbl might get you back to shooting faster. sam.

oa2.org has a lot of info on oly guns.

I've heard a lot of ppl complain, but from what I've seen, all the complaints are about oly's older guns... really old guns. Their new stuff is supposed to be excellend. I just built a 20" hbar I need to post pics of, but I used a majority of oly parts. No complaints.

The general consensus I have heard has been they are great for plinking and punching holes in paper but true accuracy is few and a far between. This is coming from Armalite bushmaster and colt guys along with a few stag. You have camps everywhere. If Oly stands behind their product I say go for it.

This is the first time I've heard of that brand. It's hard to beat the price they sell them for ! Do you know someone that has another brand where you can compare them ? Hopefully someone will come along that has had experience with the Olympic.

Olympic Arms makes good stuff. Not the quality of Stag or RRA, but still good. If your going to go with something with a 16" barrel, stick with a standard M4 profile barrel. Looks much cooler, and shouldn't be as heavy. However, if your wanting something for accuracy, go with a 20" stainless steel barrel, or just a standard 20" upper. If your staying within 300 yards, get a 5.56 chambered M4 upper. Keep in mind, that gun might be under $700, but you'll have to add a decent red dot, and front/rear sights(or should anyways). That right there is another $500, at least. And, get something with a collapsible stock if your staying with a 16" barrel. Just do this and you'll be happy. Go to a local FFL and tell them you want a stripped AR-15 lower. Get either Stag, Double Star, RRA, Superior Arms, should cost you no more then $150 AFTER taxes and fees. Next, go to Del-Ton and order their basic M4 kit for $475. Don't worry about getting a chrome lined barrel(unless you want, doesn't really matter since you don't live in a jungle.). That right there puts you about $600. Order a LMT, or some type of flip up rear sight for $100, thats now $700. Use that for a while, and be happy. A good red-dot and mount will cost you $300 at best, or, over $1000 if you want. Then, once you get use to the rifle, order you a different stock/grip/railed forearm, and have fun with it.

I've heard that stag makes really nice ar's and my friend has a RRA one, so I can attest to their quality.

I always was taught the "ABC's" of AR-15, and that was Arma-light, Bushmaster, and Colt. But if everything is made to the same specs, why would they be so much better?

i'll check out some stags, see what they have. MY buddy works for the police and said i can get a A4 style colt for about $850 from police surplus

Pred that is a good idea, I have plenty experience with an M16, I could build one with my eyes closed! I should do that. Is there a way to search for FFL's online?

Bushmaster and Colt cost way to much for what they are. You pay for a logo. Just go to any shop that sells guns, they will have to be an FFL.

If your asking me, probably to much. I really like the look of a bull barrel. But the weapon will mostly be used for targets. I want to start shooting farther than I ever have. A few hundred meters. I am thinking a 5.56 Varmint 20'' fluted bull barrel on a flattop lower. But I do not think I will like the price or the weight of it. I have been reading a lot of post about the ar lately and no one seems to see a need for a bull barrel I really just like how they look and have always wanted one so I will probably drop the dime for it. I might take a trip down to J&T and see what they have or wait for the next gun show and look around.

Where are you from SS, KY? A 16" barrel will get you 300 yards easily. If your wanting to go out to 500 yards, I'd go with a 20" barrel. I'm not a fan of bull barrels simply because I like having a flash hider, bayo lug, more of a military look. If I were you, I'd do something like I'm planning. Go look up a SAM-R(I think). Basically, it's a normal lower, with a 20" stainless barrel, free float railed forearm, and some good optics.
