300 Rem Ultra Mag

I am the proud new owner of a Savage 111G in 300 Remington Ultra Magnum, and couldn't be happier. Recoil isn't really that bad, and though I have yet to scope it, I hit the neck of a pop bottle at 50yds resting my arm on the table, not the rifle on the bench. Anyone else have fun with this round or wanted to know about it first? Any favorite loads?

I have a remington sendero sf in 300 RUM. What a calibre!!!! I am in love with the gun. It is a tack driver for sure. What are you scoping yours with? I put the new Leupold VX-II on mine with a set of dual dovetail bases and rings. I was told they handle the recoil better. As for bullets, I was using the Remington Ultra-mag in 180 gr Nosler Part. but have switched to the 180 gr. swift scirrocco by Remington as well. I am not set up to reload the 300 RUM yet but when I am I will seriously look at the Barnes XLC.

My scope's a Weaver 3-9x50. Don't have mounts yet, kind of broke due to emergency truck repair. All in good time.

What are you feeding the 300 RUM? Are you reloading? I am now using the Swift Scirrocco in 180 gr. and have found an amazing factory round! I group 5 shots that can be covered by a quarter at 100 yds. I used the dual dovetail bases and rings from Leupold. My scope is a VX-II from Leupold as well. This combo in 3-9x40mm is working great for me but my rifle wouldn't recoil as much as your because mine is heavier (8.5# bare and about 9.5# with scope, bases and rings)

I think the factory listed the weight as 7.5 lbs. So far, I've been feeding it Remington 180gr, I forget what the bullet is called. Only fired 6 shots, and have yet to mount the scope. I just picked up my RCBS reloading dies yesterday. It'll be a while before I get the time to shoot it more or get scope mounts, but I'll update y'all when I do.

How does your lighter rifle kick. I'd be lying to say the recoil is not strong but it is easily managable.

It's not bad at all. The butt is well padded. The kick is strong but not hard, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I find the recoil to push more like a 12 gauge than a rifle. Just the same, I am glad it has a good recoil pad on it.
As well, I find my is not as loud as I thought it would be. I have a 303 Brit. Lee-enfield that is heads and shoulders louder than my 300RUM.
I almost bought the Savage 116 weather warrior instead of my sendero but the availability would have made the wait unbearable.

I got my 111G two days after I asked for it to be ordered.

I have a Blaser rifle in this caliber with a Schmidt and Bender 3-12x50 scope on it. It kicks a lot, but no scope bite so far. The rifle is too light for the caliber, in my opinion. I plan on taking it pig hunting soon.

Mines a Remington LSS w/ a 5x15x50 Bushnell Elite. I have this thing weighted down with a large set of bipods and the recoil pad I got for Christmas. I am using 165gr Sierra Game Kings in my own loads.
