Folks; I have spent awhile looking for the Ruger SR9
Cougar 8000, and a G17. I have a G22 so I know pretty much about the Glock. What I intended to do was a personal physical comparison. In our area we have large enough dealers that being able to put one in your hands I didn't think would be to difficult. Wrong. The first SR9 I found I didn't like the feel.
Cannot explain how it felt. Compared to a G17 in one hand and SR9 in the other. I like the features, shape, and 9mm. Large gun store didn't have a Cougar. Off I go. Found another SR9 felt, fondled, handled and it wasn't the same feel. Felt better. Both were set up with the back strap thing placed the same way. Kept going looking for Cougar.
Sat. past gun show my favorite dealer brought for me SR9 I again fondled, felt and it felt okay. No Cougar. In the end I fondled 5-6 different SR9 and the first one; something was wrong. I'll wait for now until I get my own comparison done. In the meantime I brought the G17 home. She [favorite dealer] forced me. Priced to a Goooooood customerI am and will continue to see if I can find the Cougar, and compare it to the SR9
I know I want the SR9 or Cougarand yeah I might be a little confused

I bought one of the new SR9s and I have already put 400 rounds thru it with zero problems! I love it.

Here is a thread with my detailed reviews and comments on the SR9, if anyone is interested:

For those who have an SR9, can you tell if its slide rides against polymer or if there is an internal sub-frame for the metal-metal contact? Steyrs and Tauruses have such frames, Glock and FN have metal rails moulded into polymer, and other rugers look like they have nothing but plastic against metal.

That's a good question BRG3. I was worried about that then I bought my S&W M&P, but was happy to find that they have a stainless steel guide resting on top of the polymer frame.

Yes, there is an internal metal sub-frame that the slide operates on in the SR9.

I have two Ruger P95DCs that have slide to polymer frame contacts with no metal-to-metal. They both have well over 2,000 rounds each thru them with no problems, and are still going strong...

Thanks for that report. I find myself now tempted by them. Anyone know if their mags are interchangeable with anything else?

The mags are not interchangeable with any other Ruger firearms! Fit the SR9 and nothing else. They are a rather unique design, too. In order to make them 17-rd capacity in that thin of a grip, Ruger did something that made them a little harder to load than most.

The included mag loader tool is almost a requirement rather than an aid, and you have to push down on the front tip of the bullet just before you push down on the case the mag loader, in order to load the magazine without excessive force....

I really, really like my SR9 and I'm glad I've got it - would purchase it again - but it does have its quirks. Loading the mags is definitely one of them.

Thats a good looking pistol, it has a passing resemblence to the P345, but different upon closer inspection. Alot nicer and more modern than my P95. I'm glad to see Ruger is finally putting some effort into the appearance of their guns.

My S&W M&P-9mm has this same issue. It also has a 17 round magazine, and it's sometimes very hard to load to capacity. I found that it's slowly becoming easier, but a mag loader is still a very good tool to have.

striker fired

The trouble can be that unless it is a double action you cant get a second strike on a hard primer with a striker fired weapon. A good example of what I am talking about is in the Glock or Hi-Point. If it misfires you have to jack another round into it. Neither of which are double action.

There are 2 types of handguns. Those fired by a hammer mechanism, and those fired by a striker mechanism.

Hammer mechanisms are obvious. They have a hammer that swings down to either strike a firing pin, or strike the primer directly.

Striker systems are similar to what some bolt action rifles use, where pulling the trigger releases a spring that is cocked behind and around the firing pin. The firing pin is then sent forward into the primer.

The advantage to the striker system is that nothing is exposed, and it is usually more reliable.

The disadvantage is that striker handguns are double action (heavier trigger pull usually), and once the firing pin goes forward, you can't pull the trigger again until the slide goes back.

This means if you have a hard primer, you have to rack the slide again to get a 2nd hit on the primer. With hammer type pistols, you can just pull the hammer back again to give the primer a 2nd hit.

The Glock, S&W M&P, Springfield XD, Walther P99 and Ruger SR9 are all Striker pistols (there are more, these are the big ones).

The 1911, USP, Revolvers, etc, are hammer type pistols.

Here is a blown up diagram of the M&P: http://www.brownells.com/Images/Schematics/sw-mp.gif

The box around #23 shows the striker system.

Here is the actual thing: http://www.bloodimage.com/SWMP/striker.jpg

I'm still very much on the fence. I have some gun money, but don't feel I really need a 9mm of anything. I want a high cap pistol before were doomed again. Very frustrating.

Ruger has come out with the Sr in a SST blackened slide. It's a bit of a cost upgrade though. Our local gun store has one, (SST slide) it started at 420 he has it marked to 399 now. He as Sigmas at 346

Dropped off for the consignment. The SR9 is in the case though. Figured I'd get more money by doing the consignment. Not ruling out the SR9 yet. Stay tuned for the next episode of as the gun world turns.
