yes you can take it off but you have to cut it off.consider thisfirst, the m44 was sighted in at the armory with the bayonet fixed if it is not on the rifle will shoot left.i have one and i get 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yds.

I would look for a Finnish Mosin Like an M27 or M28 with a Tikka, Neuhausen, or Sako barrel which are some of the Most accurate due to the heavier Barrels The Finns put on em. Better Harmonics to begin with and with some bedding and trigger work should be < MOA easily.

They are standard 3/8th inch dovetails (.22 mounts).
