A few good guns to pick from:

There is more than the Charter Arms I am choosing from, dont want to go over $400: New Charter Arms revolver, Llama Minimax 45, Smith&Wesson 9mm sorry dont know specific model: mid-size frame nickel finish, Taurus 38 with a 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 inch barrel, Smith & Wesson 357mag model 686+ with wood grips, all of them are used but the Charter Arms, Oh and a rossi 38 snubby, they are all under $400: what is a good choice? Brand and durability are of most concern, but if between the 357 and 44 what would u pick?

Out of those you listed (since Ruger was not one of them) go with the Smith first or the Charter arms second...Stay away from The others !
If you want something that will hold value better and be reliable buy a Smith...
Rossi = Cheap, Non collectible, hard to get parts for.
Llama= About the same
Taurus= I won't even go there after all the bad ones and horror stories.

Caliber is up to YOU !

Charter

I bought a Charter Bulldog pug .44 spl. about 6 mo. ago. For half blind 53 yr. old, it was putting them in a 10" circle at 25 yds.

Thanks for your insite, I would like to own a mid-sized gun in a larger caliber is what I was thinking, the gun is going to be for general purpose, home defence and shooting at the range. The price of ammo doesn't concern me, around here 40 is about 13.95, 44mag is about 26.95, 38 is about 9.95, and 9mm is about 8.95, 45acp is about 19.95, 357mag is about 14.95. I just would like a new gun in general but something in a large caliber and smaller than my: Redhawk, Glock22.

Without question I'd go with the Smith and Wesson.
