Just got a Savage 10fp in .223 and I'm having a hard time deciding what scope (Brand and Power) to put on it. The rifle will be used for varmint hunting mostly. I would like a variable power with Side Focus. If anyone has any advice I'm willing to listen. Thanks.

Congrats on the Savage 10FP. I have the cheaper version in a Stevens .223 that I have with an AO scope on it. The Savage/Stevens .223 rifles are very very accurate. I wanted a SF scope but they seemed to all be more expensive. My cheapy Simmons AO is so accurate on this rifle that I won't ever change the scope. It's a consistant 1/2" at 100yds w/55gr econo ammo. I had looked at Mueller SF scopes but decided to be happy with what I had already. The only drawback to AO is the arm reach is further to adjust the objective.

Something in 4x-12x with a 50mm lens and AO would be a good choice . plenty of light gathering without being too large and variable Power for close to long shots on a .223 would be my recommendation, and not knowing your budget, I can't recommend a brand.
I like Redfield, Weaver, Leupold, Nikon, and some Tasco's Brand scopes. There are lots to choose from.

Scopes with a lot of power are great for targets and even varmints in good weather but for all around coyote hunting I'll back MM,s sugestion of a 4x12 or such.You see yotes mostly early or late in the day and you need light gathering capability,plus it is just too hard to get on target and stay on with a high power and adjustments are more sensitive.

i like my nikon but there are a bunch of nice rigs out there, like sightron, Burris, Leupold, swavorski, Zeiss

i was going to get a 6.5x20x40 leupold but when i looked through one it didnt look as astounding as i had imagined.
yes i took it outside and gave it a good long look at various distances.
i wasnt THAT impressed.

for $600 i dont know what i expected but ..............

Hey Guys, i,ve had a 6.5-20 x 50 leupy for about 15 years and am so happy with it. Even after it had a misshap and got dent back to the factory for repair for free......

I wont be changing

Nikon, Leupold, or a used Zeiss... you can't go wrong

i am not denigrating leupolds.
they are not for me is all.
i wanted more magnification anyhow and wasnt willing to pony up that kind of cash.
i have a feeling that the money to quality curve slows down a lot once you start to approach about the $500 or $600 mark. and the next step up doubles the price tag.
any thoughts?

while i like leupy's, for a little less money you can get a bushnell 4200 that'll be clearer than a leupold VXIII. for varmints i like a 6.5-20 or 8-24X with a mil-dot or a varmint reticle.

Well I finally pulled out my wallet and went with Bushnells Elite 4200 in 6-24 x 40. I thank everyone for there input.
