I've had my vehicle searched so thoroughly they even broke down the spare tire in the trunk, they were so convinced I had something and determined to find it. They also took the upholstery panels off the doors. They were downright frustrated by the time they let me go. Of course, it never occurred to them to break down the left front tire... ![]() Quote:

Texas T.When an arrest is made, the vehicle impounded to the impound lot, we would make an inventory of items in the vehicle. Covering your azz and the impound lot. If contraband was uncovered during the inventory, then charges would be added. I'm retired now so I don't know todays policies. In short, when an arrest was performed, you were responsable to the vehicle and it's contents.

Scariest traffic stop I ever had was when I was on leave in 1976 and I headed out to my Aunt's place near Borrego Springs, I stopped at the pantry pride that used to be on the turn off in Temecula and then fueled at the exxon accross the road. Because I was going hunting for a variety of critters out there as well as field testing a new toy my little car had a couple of cased, unloaded, with bolts removed rifles on the rear deck visable through the window. When I finished fueling I expected the attendant to come out as they usually did in those days for the cash for the fuel, he made it half way out stopped when he glanced in the rear window of my car did a 180 and went right backinto the stations office where I had to follow so's I could pay the poor trembling soul! I had paid up so I climbed back into my little car and headed out towards S-2 and my Aunt's place not 15-20 minutes after I had left that station I was cut off and stopped by get this 2 San Diego County Sherrifs Units, a Border Patrol Unit and a CHP Unit a total of 6 officers all with their flashing lights and spotlights pointed at lil ol me and my little car. Needless to say they HAD to run all the serial numbers to make sure the rifles and shotguns I had in the car weren't stolen, as well as get their station to call my COMMAND to see if'n I really was a sailor home on leave looking to do some rabbit hunting! Taught me to make sure my firearms after that were out of sight out of mind!

I was headed toward the back building of an auto repair center one day when I was a meter reader. I was wearing my uniform, carrying my dog stick with me (a three-foot chunk of 1/2" pvc pipe. with a bicycle grip on one end and a tennis ball on the other), and walking fast. When I got there I was lucky I didn't get jumped by a panicked bunch of mechanics and their service manager, because the receptionist in the front office had called and warned there was a man with a baseball bat running straight at them. I found out later she had also called 911, and it was probably funny when the squad cars showed up. But I didn't hang around for the show; I had meters to read.

| There's search incident to arrest, meaning the vehicle and/or any part readily accessible to the arestee(where contrband could hidden) and there search for "inventory" prior to the vehicle being towed.Either would apply. Assuming the vehicle was towed. This is basic, search and seizure laws get very technical and really depend on each individual case.
