There are plenty on the market for $300 or less with 40-60X magnification. I plan to spot targets at long-rage matches for a friend of mine and I'd like to know if 60X would be enough, assuming the optics are clear.

I don't think one can get much more magnification and stay under the given price range you stated. Are you talking the DCM/CMP high powered rifle shoots with peep sights? I've looked through $300.00 40x and 60x guys had at the range and they are so so. You should get by on them..but are you talking 1000 yards?

.224 holes can be hard to see sometimes, that would be the real test I'd say for the scope. I bought a Leupold 25x spotting scope due to the compact size but it is not the best range scope. I could barely see the .224 holes at 100 yards esp if they were close together.But one thing Leupold will do is honor the lifetime warranty. Even if you drop your stuff off the horse, out of a tree stand...and mine was armored protected and had a built in thin crosshair in it that I wanted.

Leupold has been fantastic to me in the past, couldn't agree more.
The matches are BPCR up to 500 yards with a 45-70, so the holes should let plenty of light through the target.
