I swear that sounds like my big bro. He is always telling me how he wants to buy a gun, but he never has. Spends all his money on beer and cigs instead then calls me and says "Hey you wanna go out shootin?" Sure, says me, what did you buy? LOL!!! Shoots up all my ammo everytime! But, I don't mind too much. Nice to get to see him on occasion.

Hey, I would go with a revolver, single shot rifle, or a bolt action rifle(magazine fed) because most bolt, magazine fed rifles can be loaded with out the magazine just single shot.

I think the perfect survival rifle for the long haul would be a tubular feed 22 bolt action with a composite stock. It is too easy to loose a magazine especially in a high stress situation. Anyway, one of the Marlins come to mind. I don't have such a rifle in a bolt action. I have semi-autos though. If thrust into the situation at this moment in time, I would probably pack my Remington 541S with every magazine I own and a 4x scope. The mags are plastic, so they should last.

I will tell you what I tell my customers in production environments that are worried about down time. Get the equipment you are comfortable with. Make sure it's supported by spare parts. Buy the spare parts. Train on how to replace said spare parts. Increase up time.

Rossi and H&R make a pretty cheap, reliable .22 break-action. They even have a combo with a 12-or 20-gauge barrel, and you can even get the Trifecta, made by Rossi, which is a .22 barrel, a 20 gauge shotgun barrel, and a .243 centerfire rifle barrel (with an action, of course...)
I just thought it was pretty cool...

You know what, you could also get the Savage Mark 1 G bolt-action single-shot rifle. There's almost no parts, and it's pretty foolproof. My Grandmother's still got one made under the Stevens name and it's a beast, still minute-of-squirrel's-eye at 30 yards....

two-70 mentioned his Marlin 981 -T I also have a the same rifle and if the tube ever became dented it could be used as a single shot.
I think I could get the dent out if a freak occurance like that were to happen.
My choice would be the Marlin 981-T boltaction rifle or it's big brother 983-T 22 magnum.
Theres not much to break on these guns...A.H

You can also put a block of wood or something perfectly shaped to fit between the barrel and the magazine tube, then wrap both with cord to keep it in place. It'll stop the tube from bending, and you'll have a little emergency stash of cordage for your survival situation. |

| "Most Reliable" To me that equals the fewest parts. So I would have to go with a break-open single shot rifle, or a Savage 24, and a wheelgun.

Why can't it be a boltaction ? He might have a big dog get after him or run into Big Foot.LOL
I beleive i could work a bolt better than fumbling around for anther cartridge and then haveing to load it into a single shot...A.H
EDIT a boltaction 22 with a tubeular magazine is a good iddy. You don't have to keep up with spare (what Marlin calls )CLIPS !

SW 617 revolver or pretty much any good bolt action. I base that on them being easy to clean.

I've always heard good things about the ruger 10/22. A buddy had one that was pretty much indestructible. I ran across one stainless, with the hardwood stock brand new for a 100.00 so i grabbed it asap.
Haven't got to shoot it yet, but it seems pretty solid. I do like the tube feed on my old marlin more. I've got many a memory of dropping rounds down the tube while chasing squirrels around the back forty when i was a little fella.
The ruger has a neat little rotary magazine that mounts flush on the stock which is nice but the tube is just easier to load.
Gotta love being able to buy ammo for 12.00 a brick. People often under estimate just how deadly the 22 can be. I killed my first deer with a 22. I was very young and recoil sensitive so the 22 was my gun.
