Wait, wait, wait. I'm no gearhead, but I know a little...what exactly am I looking at here? Those...slots or vanes or whatever, are those the little plates on the inside of the rotor? Is the front of that rotor just...entirely gone? Am I seeing that right? How could the pad even press against it properly? How does this even happen? - Coeloptera |

I ran into an even more extreme version of this when I was turning wrenches back in the 80's. The guy who cleaned our carpet brought his 1 ton Ford van in and said "it won't stop". I checked and it was out of fluid, so I filled it up. I jumped in and started pumping the brakes but never got any pressure to build. I looked under the van and there was fluid at each wheel on the ground. When I got the wheels off, both ft. rotors came of in two pieces like the above pics. When I pulled the rear wheels, I really got a shock, both drums were in two pieces also! When questioned, he said he'd been adding some fluid, but not much. FWIW, he had a 250 gal. water tank and a whole bunch of commercial carpet cleaning equipment in the back of it and had been driving all over town with it! Apparently, it had worn the drums and rotors evenly enough that when he made a hard stop, they all popped at the same time.

Might be a little late to have them turned. My last car that I bought used started having front brake problems. They started grinding and I checked into it. Both front rotors were beyond repair and needed replaced. The car only had 12,000 miles. The previous owner obviously drove with his foot on the brake. And I have also seen rotors worn almost exactly like the pictures. These people shouldnt be allowed to drive! I know 2 people that continued to drive with the oil light on. Both people had to buy new cars. Duh!

The pics are gone now (or won't open on my PC for some reason), but were the pads even there at all? My current car needed the pads replaced pretty shortly after I got it (they were nearly entirely gone) and they squealed just driving, so I bought a new set and had one of the local llanteras put them on for me. How would this sound? I can't imagine he had any performance on them. Just worn down pads are bad enough as far as I'm concerned. - Coeloptera |
