Goin Squirrel Huntin Tomorrow

well it was a bitter day here in Northern Oklahoma, bout 3 to 4 inches of snow on the ground today, our first snow of the year. Tomorrow it is to be sunny and 40 degrees so i thought after i got throwing my news paper routes i would grab my little 12 gauge single shot pardner shotgun and go chase some limb rats, don't know if they were out today or not with the snow blowing and falling, but its to be pretty nice tomorrow. will be my 1st squirrel hunt this year and am excited about it. can't wait

Sounds like fun. I just turned my Beagles loose on our company's 26-acre compressor station site to chase rabbits, and I'm listening to them sing (if you can call it that...someone who didn't know better might think something was killing them).

Would be nice to haul out a shotgun and wait for them to run one by me, but I suspect the company would frown on that.

Do you plan on cooking them up if you get some? If so, how do you go about it?

troy The way I like them is fried and smothered in gravy with home made bisquits.
It's unbelieveable at how well squirrel taste.
When I was a kid my mother would fix'em that way for breakfast and anyother time.

For some reason Mike, squirrels are off limits throughout Southern California. They can be hunted in the rest of the state, so I'm not sure what that's all about.

I suppose I could go after ground squirrels; they're considered vermin and there's no season or limit on them. But they're kind of little fellers. Of course I guess they're bigger than doves, and I've eaten plenty of those...

Back at the dawn of time, my Father, Uncle Bill, Uncle Sam and myself used to hunt them almost every day. Uncle Sam had a dog, terrier looking thing, as I recall, that was more than just good help! The beast would be up in the tree behind anything he could find and the dog, on the ground, would just circle the tree barking up a storm, sooner or later, the beast would become uncomfortable and move to a point one if us, with our
.22's, would pick him off! We had mostly the grey one but, a few of the much larger red ones would almost always become part of the feast. We would generally par-boil them and then finish them off on the barbie-Q! Dang, three or four would taste mighty good....yup!

I understand that those ground squirels can carry bubonic plague. Am I wrong?

Not just the ground squirrels, Rave. According to an article I just googled:

"Victims of plague in the U.S. become infected through rodents, and can become infected by skinning an infected animal. Plague exists in the fleas of rock squirrels, California ground squirrels, prairie dogs, wood rats, chipmunks, and wild rabbits, among others. Highest risk groups in the U.S. are Native Americans (especially Navajos), hunters, veterinarians, campers, hikers, and pet owners who may become infected through an infected cat."
