The .45LC can come close to the 454 light loads(key word being close) but not match it. The 454 is superior to the 45LC but I still think that the 45LC could take any game animal that the 454 could.

that bullet was barely expanded.
if a bear was up close and personal.
that bullet wouldnt destroy enough meat to incapacitate a large bear.
all i could hope for is to get lucky and blow a hole in his skull.
and i would have to do it FAST!
win. super X

I would trust my .45 LC OM Vaquero Ruger to do the job, if I'd dare load it to .44 mag spects but I wouldn't. I'd buy a .454 Casull first or the S&W .460. The reason I wouldn't buy a .500 S&W or any other .500 is because for me that is too much gun. But I am comfortable with a .460 S&W.

It will do about as much good as either of the two choices you listed.
If that does not sound attractive consider and the intent is to actually kill one, I would suggest a 7mmRM with at least 4 shots in the gun. I've met two grizzly bears face to face on the trail, and my biggest single worry was only having 4 chances in the gun. As good luck would have it they backed down without a shot fired. A blank gun may have expedited the situation.

Can't agree about the blanks. If I fire a "warning shot" it will be with a bullet involved. A rifle is not practical when traveling by kayak. Sometimes I am in a national park and the firearm is out of sight. As fast as a griz can move I seriously doubt anyone could get off more than one shot regardless. When I'm on Forest Circus land I may just take that sawed off shotgun. It'l be a pain in the kayak though. I don't plan on killing one but I don't plan on being killed either.

Warning shot ?!? WTH is a warning shot ? Is that a charging bear, or is it going to stop before it gets to you ?

Id go with the S&W 460 ES Emergency Survival kit Product: Model 460ES - Emergency Survival Kit
or the S&W 500ES Emergency Survival kit Product: Model 500ES - Emergency Survival Kit
You know, warning shot, like when a bear gives you a warning bite, when he gets your head in his mouth or your arm, or your leg, whatever he decides to warning bite first.. lol

Wow that's pricey. If I were to spend that kind of money for a revolver It would have to be a Freedom Arms.

I would prefer an semi-auto with 12 shots however.

The shotgun with 5 round carrier screwed to whats left of the forestock or buy a Defender (our camp guns). Big buck shot makes a mess and would work from a kayak or sleeping bag just fine.

I'm quite sure they can be had for around less? And you have to remember, you get the extra stuff with it. I'll check around because now you got me curious about it. Never thought about it because I don't ever see myself in the woods going up against a bear. lol
In fact, in doing a quick search on gunbroker.com I found this one for $850. GunBroker.com guns: SMITH & WESSON S & W 460 460ES EMERGENCY SURVIVA (item: 92159008 ends: Feb-18-08 05:00:58 PM)
Also found this in the 500 caliber version. GunBroker.com guns: SMITH & WESSON S&W 500ES Emergency Survial Kit NIB (item: 91718891 ends: Feb-13-08 12 42 PM)
I'm sure they could both be found a little cheaper, especially the one shown for the 500. Either way, I agree with you, kinda pricey MSRPs though. And I'll have to see what Freedom Arms has to offer. Never really looked into what they make?

| 12 gauge
Go with the 12 gauge in the new Horandy rounds.
Go with both guns if you can.
But definitely go with the 12 gauge in the new Horandy rounds.

Freedom Arms makes a quality pistol. I don't know many people who have fast follow up shots on large pistols such as the 454 on up. Most everyone I know that has the larger caliber Double Action pistols always shoot them single action style. .357 on down I would say the DA is the way to go. Ofcourse that is only my opinnion.
