CCI and winchester primer difference..?

Hi all, I load a lot of 45LC and usually use winchester std/mag primers. I was givin a box (1000) CCI large pistol primers as a gift from a friend. Whats the difference between these two types (if any) of primers. I'd ask my friend ,but he don't reload. Thanks all, Bob

In my experience, the Winchester primers generally have a softer metal cup. A lot of handloaders prefer the Winchester brand.

Winchester are usually a little hotter. but don't look a gift horse in the mouth (they have bad breath). Also be thankful you have a good friend.

I use Winchester LP/mags for my revolvers and .45 caliber Henry and Winchester '94.
And C.C.I. lg. rifle primers for my .45/70. No problems as of yet with either brand.

I like the Winchester, although I too was given a large supply of the CCIs. I use them in my .41 rem mag. Seem to work ok. I have heard of the harder metal cap in the CCI brand rounding the end of firing pins. I'm a little suspicous of this, but it was a pretty reliable fellow passing the info along. He also was telling me of the Fed. primers posting the most consistant velocities on his chrony.

I use federal primers in everything i load.I have used CCI and winchester.Winchester i still use sometimes. for some rifle loads.I still have some left.I found federal the softest.Have used CCI primers in 44magnum loads,no problems. You might have to work up the load again if changing primers mate.

The only problem I have had with Winchester primers - is that my Bushmaster M17S will rattle off four or five shots using Winny ammo! With Remington and any surplus, it runs fine. I had the same problem in my old Norinco SKS, using Winny ammo - those soft primers can cause slam-fire in some semi-autos.
In a revolver, no problem!!

I haven't had any problems using CCI primers in handguns. .38/.357, .45ACP - all run fine with either CCI or Winny.

I'm pretty much a die hard Winchester primer fan because they are far more forgiving in the primer seating stage.

I have many less crimped or crunched primers with the Winchesters whereas, particularly, with the CCIs, I have more epsecially when the procket might have a slight crimp to it.

I've been wondering about various primers, their individual strengths and weaknesses, and because of this thread and comments from forum members I'm getting answers to my questions.

Thanks...
