In case any readers of this forum didn't catch my thread about sighting in my 91/30. I wanted to point out that when my rifle shot high with the rear sight as low as possible, Toolman recommended that I install a piece of "shrink wrap", a product recommended for insulating electrical connections.
I went to my trusty True Value hdw and got a pack of GB brand 3/32" shrink wrap tubing. Slipped one over the front sight pin, down through the hole in the protective hoop, flicked my bick to heat it, then clipped it off adding about 1/8" to the height of the pin.
This cure keeps the pin diameter small, straight and the rifle is accurate. The pack was $3.59. Thanks Toolman!
Shrink wrap works good. I cut mine with a small dykes at an angle to offer a point.
Aiming low is a good option. The tubing is not going to drop off unless you cook the barrel with long term rapid fire. The small shrink tubing is going to be cut off to remove it.
Originally I was going to pound out the front site post and machine it so that it stands up taller or perhaps thread it and screw in a small screw but decided to try the shrink tubing and found that it works well.
At any rate it is a good trick. There are a number of ways to improve your mosin on the various MN sites.
I have done 3 like toolman said but used number 12 wire black insulation and it isnt going to fall off , its nice and tight and is plastic so not effected by heat!At least not to much
For a more permanent solution that is still adjustable, take the sight off and drive out the pin from the top and insert an automotive-type roll pin in its' place. It can then be tapped down to reach the exact height you need and the original can be reinstalled later if you want to put it back to original.
