M44 rear sight pin

How do you remove the rear sight pin that holds the spring and elevator in place? I've been tapping on that thing with a center punch for 30 minutes and it didn't even budge. I tried different positions, c-clamp, etc. I don't want to damage this rifle because it's in fantastic condition...set aside the stock.

Are you sure you're tapping it the right direction? They're one-way...

It appears to go in from the left to right. I've mostly been working on the right, which should be the right way. I have to go buy another punch. The ruskies chromoly steel ate my low-carbon alloy punch. At least the front sight came off with no hassle.
