Ruger Mini-14 Questions

Hi all,
I've been looking for a High Capacity .223 rifle for a bit now, and I think I've decided on the Ruger Mini-14. I wish I had the money for an AR-15, but alas...No dice. I was wondering a couple things about the rifle that I hope some people on this forum could help me out with:
1. Are there any aftermarket sidefolder kits availible that are non-tactical looking?
2. What can be done to improve the accuracy of this rifle?
3. Pros and Cons or the reciever-style? I've heard that it is similiar to the m14 style, but that's about it.
4. Finally, are non-factory hi capacity magazines decent quality?
5. Can the front ramp sight be replaced easily? I would like to put a narrower m14 type of front sight on if possible.

Thanks a lot guys!

1. Don't know
2. Re-barrel, replace or rebuild the trigger group. Or save money and just buy an AR.
3. It does the job.
4. Some are, some are not.
5. The blade is easy to remove.

If you want a great plinker that is cool and fun to shoot and don't care if you shoot MOA then get the rifle! There are a lot of after market barrels and improvements you can get to make them shoot better and look and perform better. They are FUN and reliable! But keep in mind that after all the new barrels are installed, new triggers and sights are installed and all the extra stuff you could probably find a nice AR type rifle for about the same money or less. ARs will flat shoot and they IMHO are much better bang for the buck.

Look at Accuracy systems out of Odessa Texas. They will show you what can be done with a Mini. They are great rifles and a lot of fun. However, I am not too sorry I sold mine. Just my 2 cents.

Your comparison

If you feel that badly about a Ruger (as I sense from reading your post) then do not buy it. Save for what you want even if it delays your purchase by several months. However, the Ruger is not a bad gun and it has experienced success in the marketplace. It is your choice but why buy a gun for which you do not have a good feeling?

I have 2 of them (1 blue and 1 s.s.) I love them. you can get just about any kind of after market goodies you can imagine. they say they are not accurate but tell that to all the deer, turkeys, hogs and other asst critters I've killed with mine. they are extremely reliable and I have had good luck with after market steel mags. the lips on the plastic ones break when kept loaded too long. I dont know if its still made but I have a side folding stock by Ram Line that is walnut wood with a tube steel shoulder piece. nice clean lines like the older sub machine guns.

Hmm, well shoot. I just don't know what to do now. Would I be able to get an AR-15 for under 700$? If that were the case, I may just do that. I like the Ruger, but I would just like to mod it out a tiny bit. I like the wood on it, and its simple (well simpler than the Ar-15) design too. I just want to make sure I get something that I wont regret in a month.

I was asking the same questions a couple of months ago. I ended up with a SS Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. I mainly bought it because the price was right ($500 never been fired) and it was a FTF transaction. Couple of months later I got a 20" Rock River Varmint. Saving beans for a 16" AR of some type if I can pick one up FTF.

It all depends on what you want it for. The Mini:
1. Is light enough for the wife to handle
2. Will not scare the sheep as much as an AR if I have to sit on the front porch with it for a week or so after a hurricane comes through or am walking to BOL after TSHTF.
3. If fed decent ammo from a reliable magazine will go BANG every time.
4. Is accurate enough to do the job < 50 yards (from most places on my property I can't see further than 50 Yards anyway.)

I won't knock the mini. It's a good rifle for the money, especially if you can pick one up used. But accurate it's not, at least not for my purposes. As a defensive firearm, it's fine.

1. Yes
2. Never going to get the accuracy of an AR 15, but this weapon wasn't designed with accuracy in mind.
3. I own 2 and like them both. With that said, if you shoot anything beyond 20 round magazines heat becomes a major detractor to these weapons. They were not designed to have a lot of rounds shot through at one sitting.
4. Decent I suppose, but have had issues with them.
5. Yes

These weapons were designed to be a farm tool for ranchers and the like. Again I like my minis, but you would be better served to save for an AR if accuracy and capacity were your concern. Many AR's can be had for $600-$700 if you shop at the right places.

My opinion is that you should buy a Mini-14 only if you have reason to prefer one over an AR. If you'd rather have an AR, the price difference isn't enough to justify spending that much money on something you're not as happy about.

If you're looking for less expensive 223 semi-autos with potential, check out the Saiga 223, the WASR-3, and STG-2000C in that round. All three based on the AK platform with excellent reliability and accuracy, with the Saiga being considered the most accurate and probably most reliable too.

my 14 gave me 4" groups at 100 yards. a boatload of fun to shoot but the accuracy wasn't good enough so i dumped it. now just in case your thinking that maybe a large grouping like that is ok with you, think about that for awhile. there are more accurate mini's than the one that i had so maybe you get lucky. just make sure that your not gonna be dissapointed later on account of the lousy accuracy if you go into a frenzy and buy it just cause it's cool...............like i did.

1-they are out there a few folding stock's, but not recomended due to flexing during battery.
2-ill take a good trigger upgrade plus a better barrel.
3-is just a down size of actual m-14 wich the bolt travel's too far, cycles longer.
4-there is almost one made identical to the factory one ,not from usa mag's
5-yes you can change the sight for a m-14 flash hidder combo.

I really dig my mini 14, It is what it is. a fun gun to shoot accurate enough for my needs. I'm sure I could hit a man size target out to 350 / 400 meters with the iron sights.
