The Associated Press

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. --Authorities in Williamson County say a southern Illinois man died after accidentally shooting himself while hunting.

Coroner Mike Burke says 53-year-old Garry Dawes wounded himself shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday at the Grounds Hunting Club in rural Williamson County.

Burke pronounced him dead a short time later.

The coroner says Dawes apparently was hunting with friends when his gun accidentally discharged.

An autopsy is planned.

Its sad to hear of the loss of his life. Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong way but I'd be asking how a hunter accidentally shoots himself fatally. I mean, an experienced hunter making that kind of error is well, as far as I know, rare. I'd be looking around to see if anyone else knew anything. Maybe it wasn't an accidental self-shooting.

Maybe I'm just paranoid or have read too much about conspiracies lately?

I don't know the details, but this happened on a well known goose club in So. IL. Typically geese at these type of clubs are hunted from pits. Hunters have to be extremely carefull hunting from pits. Your right on top of your shotgun in close quarters. There is a lot that can go wrong if not carefull.

One moment of absent-minded carelessness can undo a lifetime of good habits. That's true whether it be in hunting, boating or even just driving down the road, and we all space out occasionally.

It's a reminder that we're all only one step from the abyss...

My condolences, Jerry, to the family. Accidents happen, and with our past-time, we all need to keep safety right out in front. I don't think I'll be goosehunting up there out of a pit, we used to call'em foxholes. Memories not good, and that just might bring the past back. Everyone take care and be safe for the New Year.Scotty
