Yes they would, and they would like to know who you bought it from. I would tell them and then try to find to guy first before the leo did and get my money back. I would be very unhappy with a person that sold me a stolen firearm. That would call for a arse kickin.

Call the police and give them the serial number, make, & model, most departments will be happy to run it through NCIC. Before you buy it. Ohio doesn't do this, they must have the gun, but almost everywhere else it's just a phone call.

My dad is a sergeant, i could just have him do it, but again, i dont want it confiscated. I'd just wipe my prints off, and return it. Sounds bad, but im not a rich man, I need my money.
James, I am no lawyer, but trust me you DO NOT want to have in your possesion any firearm that has any possable link to being used in a crime or has been reported stolen. Give yoyr local PD the serial# and see what happens.
I would never buy a used gun from a private party with out doing this first before I buy it.
There was an interesting story in F&S I think, about one of the writers was crossing over the border into the Peoples republic Of canada with a if recall a M700 in 7MM rem/mag he had bought used from a private party/person to use on a bear hunt. I found out in this article that Canada runs the serial No#s of all the firearms that cross over into their country.
Sure enough it came up as being reported stolen. thankfully the candian officials were understanding and only confiscated it and allowed him into the country with his back up rifle that came back OK.

If under $7,500, you would have to take the individual to small claims court to recover your loss, unless he/she is willing to pay you back without a court decision making that person do so.
Be sure when you buy it from the individual that you get a full bill of sale/receipt with both you and their signature and written name, get a copy of their State ID or Drivers License.
Treat it like the sale/buy of a vehicle without a title.

When you buy a used gun from someone in a private sale, call the police and ask them to run the serial number before you pay and take possession of it. If the person you're buying it from has a problem with that, walk away. If everything is okay, they would not have a problem.
I know of someone who drives truck, had a guy bring a 1911A1 to his truck and asked if he wanted to buy it. He called the police and the guy ran off leaving him holding the pistol. The police came and took the pistol, after 30 days, they gave him the pistol back because it was never reported stolen. Turned out to be a contract pistol from WW2.
