No company whatsoever should get tax breaks or incentives. If you can't run a business on your own two feet then you shouldn't be in business.

I believe the breaks were given in order to explore for more oil, but why bother congress isn't going to let them dril for it if they find it. Bush won't let them drill for gas off of Florida and the democrats won't let them drill in ANWAR.

Record Profits? I gues you would make more money if you sold more gas. The oil companies only made about 7% profit last year. not necessarily the definition of gouging.

What do you consider excessive? They only made about 7% profit margin last year.

The oil companies are the petroleum industry, you can't let them regulate themselves. Governments have no place telling a company what they can charge or what they can make. If you believe this principle then you should also believe that the government can come in and tell YOU what you can make.

Funny thing, though. The more everything costs, the more money 7 percent becomes.

I agree with SPO... No company should get tax breaks.
Farmers on the other hand do need substities (spelled wrong) due to compitions from other countrys.
Were not the only ones that grow cotton, rice, soybeans but we do grow more wheat and corn.

Noone, that means farmers too! If you can't compete then why should I have to subsidize your lifestyle?

That's right it's simple economics. 7% is 7%. Oil companies aren't the only ones to exploit their customers.

I don't like the fact that people like Michael Jordan buy farmland specifically so they can get tax breaks and rake in those subsidies; most of the money goes to rich investors or agricultural corporations, instead of helping the small family farms it was supposedly intended for.

That seems to be the usual during a time of corruption running amok, both here and abroad.

There are people with lots inside city limits getting those subsidies, because they managed to get them classified as agricultural land...

An historical sidenote: while Timothy McVeigh was carrying on about our corrupt government wasting taxpayer money, he was sucking up his farm subsidies right up until he blew up that building in Oklahoma City.
