Shortening the stock

I'm thinking of shortening the stock, but not in the conventional way. On my savage 200 I was thinking of cuting the front of the stock down to where the barrel and breach meet. I will then move the sling swivel into the magazine area so I will still be able to have a sling. I was thinking this will make the barrel a complet free floating barrel, and that making it more accurate. Is this reasonable or a waste of time?

I assume you are talking about a Stevens 200 by savage. The ones that I looked at the barrel is floating already. The way I understand it if the barrel is not touching stock and does not hit the stock when the gun is fired then what would you gain by tearing up a stock? How is the rifle shooting now?

But, Heck, if it doesn't work all you would do is buy a replacement stock and fit it. And that would be fun and productive, So give it a try and let us know what the difference is?

A little less severe suggestion

First, do the time honored old test of putting a dollar bill under the barrel and working it toward the receiver. If it moves easily to the receiver you are already floating. Second, consider some sandpaper and progressive sanding along the barrel channel until the dollar bill moves easily. This is a bit less severe than your original thought. However, it is your gun and your choice.

I agree with Nathan on this one. the weight of the stock will help in reducing recoil.

Shootester I understand what your trying to accomplish, But before you cut your stock.
Go to a sporting goods store or the internet and look for a Simms Vibration Labratory barrel deresonator.
Simms is the company thats makes and sells the Limb Saver recoil pads.
You'll be out less than $20.00.
Please check them out and let us know what you think about them. I have one on my rifle and I like it !...A.H

So if I understand this idea, you are going to cut off the fore end at the front receiver ring? How do you propose to hold the gun to fire it? Sounds like a dumb idea to me but go ahead and ruin your gun, I don't mind

you can free float a barrel without butchering your rifle.

Billy I'll take it! But anyways guys the gun shoots great, but it was just an idea I had to keep me busy when I want to mess with my gun, but can't shoot. There would still be room for me to hold it, but my hand would be right infront of the trigger gaurd. Also, I was thinking of getting a new stock for it anyways.
