REAL ID

Well it looks like that if you were born after Dec. 1, 1964 that you will have to be a card carrying American by 2011, but the Dept. of Homeland Security says there will not be any chips in the cards. (Yeah Right) Here is the link:

I don't like the thought of that. I don't even like those onboard "we know where you are" machines. Just think how they could be abused, and you know the bad guys will figure out how to disable them. It seems like everything comes down to restricting and liimiting the freedom of law-abiding citizens under the guise of going after the bad apples. "Big Brother" is starting to look more and more inevitable to me. And it's a scary thought. Scotty

It's interesting that they think I'm too old to be dangerous...

California already meets all these requirements, except for the one about taking picture, at the beginning of the application process instead of the end, to keep on file anyway if someone's rejected for a license.

Remember, this is all in the name of security and for our protection. I also read that California is making it law that all new houses have to have a remote sensor that allows their appliances to be monitored in case of power issues. This also includes computers. So...

Kalifornia needs to fall off and sink. Too much of that state is FUBAR.

The REAL ID will falter and fail.

Again, I'm not sure what the fuss is.

1. It'll require states to check Social Security numbers, but don't most of them already do that?

2. It'll require states to check the immigration status of people applying for licenses. Don't most of you oppose illegal immigrants getting licenses anyway? How can they enforce that if they don't check?

3. The cards will have three layers of security to prevent forgeries. Is that a bad thing?

4. The cards won't have the readable microchips in them, which is what most people seemed to object to.

My concern is mostly about what they do with the information after they're done checking; any data base is subject to being abused. But realistically, I believe the government can already find out anything they want to know about any of us already, except for people who are living an extreme underground life style. So I'm more worried about it being one more database that can be hacked by identity thieves and that sort of people.

Troy, even though my first thoughts were against this, you have presented a good case for it other than the microchip. Although the government says there will not be one, they have been known to lie in the past. How can we prove that there is no chip there? Also, as you said the data base is a problem. Yes, I agree with your assessment that the Govt. can already find out anything they want to know about us.

Fellers, the FBI and the rest have had a file on me since I was 17 years old. I don't feel that they need any more ways to keep track of me. The file was started because they decided that I needed a top secret clearance. Guess what? I've never been in trouble, 'cause number one, I figured they'd just come and get me. The main deterrent was my upbringing. Maybe, instead of spending more money to keep track of us, they ought to spend some to teach folks to bring their kids up properly. Oops, more big brother! I'm open to suggestions, but don't want any more tags attached to my hiney! Scotty

Way back when, Scotty, I had a Top Secret Crypto clearance. When they cleared me, I realized they hadn't checked me out as thoroughly as they thought they had...

But I've mostly stayed out of trouble anyway.

Damn T2K, was you a spook, too? I was too young to have been in much trouble, and besides, my Dad was still the Boss, and would have slapped the snot out of me. That was apretty good deterrent for staying on the right side of the law. And no, he never had to follow thru! Scotty

I got around a lot when I was in the Navy, Scotty. You'd think I'd have come out of it with more interesting stories than I did, though...

Danggit, Troy - we coincide again! I was a Crypto Tech too - on the old KGR/T14 and KWR/T37 systems both on shipboard and at NAVCAMSLANT, NorVa. So, Uncle has me on file too.
I still don't like this new-fangled idea, but can understand the reasoning behind it. Hard to fight the Illegals if they can fake an ID easily.

As to that nonsense on power useage in Cali - I figure that alone will really jumpstart the home solar/wind power industry like nothing else. They can't regulate what isn't on the Grid.

When I moved to Illinois, I had to go get my driver's license. They had this long list of acceptable documents to prove your identity, but basically it boiled down to birth certificate, another state's dl, and a passport. I guy I met was an airline pilot. When he came back from trying to get his license he was livid. He was a former U2 pilot, and since his current employer kept his passport at the airport he figured his NSA security card would suffice. WRONG! The goof behind the counter said it wasn't on the list of acceptable documents. When he asked why, she said "For national security reasons". He replied "I AM THE FREAKING NATIONAL SECURITY!".
