Was just wondering if anyone had a favorite target load for the .40 S&W? I have been looking around and thought I'd ask the people here. (I have a S&W M&P .40S&W.)
Thanks!
Wouldn't you know I reload lots of .40, but am out of town for work. I do find my Sig P229 seems to like the heavier bullets a little bit better. I generally use 180 grain moly coated truncated cone bullets.

Back in town yet?

Is there a difference between Winchester and CCI primers? I have 1000 Win.s but no CCi.
CCI might be a touch harder. Winchesters are actually my favorite, but if I remember correctly, the CCI's were on sale so I grabbed 5000. Winchester will work fine.
And this is what I can do with them. 21 feet, pistol rest, SIG P229 with Crimson Trace Laser Grips.

My eyes are getting old, and I found that with Laser Grips, I can shoot off-hand groups at 50 feet that are about one-third the size of what I can shoot with open sights.
And, if you really need to hold a gun on a perp, you can watch him with both eyes while knowing exactly where your gun is pointing the whole time. DEFINITELY worth the price for an SD weapon.
to shoot .40 S&W in a Sig 229 that I normally shoot as a .357 Sig. The problem is that the .40 bullets shoot higher then the .357 bullets because they are heavier and slower. So, I am currently shooting 155 grain .40s and may try 135 grain .40s.
That is different enough from what others are shooting in the .40 that I thought I would add it to the discussion. Also, I am looking for a really clean powder, so I chose "Clays" (not Universal Clays). And, it needed to be not too expensive. My load is:
155 grain Ranier plated FP bullet
3.8 grains Clays
standard small pistol primer
mixed brass
It reliably functions my P-229 with its regular recoil spring, and is plenty accurate at normal IDPA ranges.
Be advised that "Clays" is a bit touchy as a .40 S&W powder, with a small range of charge weights and the possibility to double- or triple-charge a case.
My load for the .40 depends on what comes to hand.
Right now, I am shooting West Coast (Now Zero?) 165 gr plated bullets over 6.0gr WSF ignited by a WSP.
Almost any load that cycles my pistols will shoot more accurately that I can at 25 feet, since I am not a bullseye shooter.

Now that's weird, because I also have the 357 SIG barrel and they shoot to the exact same point of aim at 25 feet. Maybe it's just the recipes I use and the fact I am firing MUCH lighter 124 grain bullets in 357 SIG?

165 gr rnfp xtream, from Nevada
4.3g bullseye
col 1.125
this is very accurate load from my Glock, 22 Bullseye is alittle dirty.
Also used
165 gr rnfp rainer, you can get this at cabellas, midway, natchaez
6.0 gr power pistol
col 1.125
This was also very accurate but has alot of muzzle flash, very clean burning powder.
