Hunter's "safety"???

I just had to talk about something that happened last night during a hunter's safety class that has me so steamed I almost came unglued when it happened.

During the class, taught by certified safety instructors one of the guys was doing a section on handguns. First he pulled out a Smith 629 and held it up. I was in awe at the beautiful example of one of the finest handguns ever made. Then he started waving it around over his head sweeping the crowd with the muzzle! Then he opens the cylinder spins it and with a flick of his shooting hand slams the cylinder shut like you see on the movies. That man will NEVER handle my wheel guns! If he had done that to my 629 he and I would have wrestled right there! Yes, the gun was cleared. But this was a hunter's safety class with a lot of young kids in the room trying to learn how to handle firearms safely. OK, now I got through that then he picks up a semi auto. Same thing happens! Only this time he looks at one of the kids on the front row and POINTS THE HANDGUN AT HIM like it was a pointer!!! Then he points the weapon at his grandfather and asks if they were related! Yes the weapon was cleared BUT A GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!!!! When he did that I almost came out of my chair and did something I would have regretted. All the time he was waving various types of handguns around like they were spoons. Pointing the muzzle where ever he pleased the 6 other instructors just stood there! After class I went up to the chief instructor and told him that I was upset by how flippant that instructor was with his weapons and told him I did not think that type of example was a good one in a class like this. He just shook his head and said "Yea, I know. He is a good instructor though."

This is a Department of Natural Resources sponsored Hunter's safety course. That behavior in that setting is totally unacceptable to me. Maybe I am just over reacting. I may be too uptight about it but, should I call the DNR and pursue this further or let it drop?

You arent over reacting and if it was me, I'd pursue it.
He sure cant teach safety with stupidity like that.
If my kid was in the room, I would grab him and leave. My kids knew better than that at 8 years old.
Never point a gun at anything you dont intend to shoot and like you said...ITS ALWAYS LOADED!
What a jerk!

Thanks guys. I will call them in the morning. Because of improper firearm handling I have one friend who has no use of his left side because of of 30-30 bullet to the neck. And another schoolmate's mother who morns her son every day of her life because of improper firearms handling.

Even as careful as I am, and I am anal about safety, I have had an accidental discharge. Muzzle pointed in a safe direction so nothing harmed other than my ego and nerves. But it can and does happen.

This guy shouldn't be teaching and probably shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a firearm.

Take him down.

Go for it, Tex. Maybe they'll slap his hand, or just maybe, they'll show him the door! I've had one accidental discharge occur in all the years I've handled firearms, and it was a new rifle, AR-15. I slipped a round in the chamber, and released the bolt. Blam! It discharged, and the round went downrange, the direction the barrel was pointing. It's second nature, pointing the front toward the target. Good training stood me in good stead! Go get him! Scotty

If it's been me I would've been pointing out the downfalls and dangers of his course to let others know about what the situation was.

TAKE HIM DOWN! ACTUALLY YOU SHOULD HAVE STOOD UP DURING THE CLASS AND ASKED HIM WHERE HE LEARNED TO HANDLE GUNS LIKE THAT, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO AVOID THAT CLASS.

Hunter's safety should be taught to children by mother's and father's. I'd go as far as you can to get him out.

Go for it. Sounds like he learned gun safety from the same school as that guy in the video who shot himself, while telling a class he was the only one in the room professional enough to handle a gun.

I too, have been a Hunter Safety Instructor and sounds to me like that guy was showing off, All of which is a NO NO. Challange his ACTIONS in front of the next class, make it known in front of the same kids he faltered in front of, that he was WRONG.

Go for it

Get this fool out of there, immediately!! This is what gives gun owners and hunters a bad name...If he would have pointed that gun at me or one of my children, I would have been off my seat, and he would have been down on his..What an idiot...I usally like to add a little face after my posts, but in this case, a little humor is not warranted!!

if they're too stupid to follow the first rule of gun safety(always keep it pointed in a safe direction) they are too stupid to teach the rest, I can't believe no one said anything
