Suddenly my backyard population of Gray Squirrels just jumped from 2-3 to six! I've been laid up for a few weeks recovering from shoulder surgery, so I have a bit of time on my hands to watch the goings on in my backyard. It would appear that love is in the air and squirrels from outside of the local population are visiting to engage in the "chase." I watched at lunch as six busytails ran about the woods in my backyard in a flurry of activity. They queued up into a twirling, twisting, jumping conga-line that scampered all over the place. The six of them almost looked like one entity scampering up and down trees, leaping from one branch to another, bouncing along a snow covered stonewall. They are definitely in the Chasing Stage of the mating season. Good luck to them! I hope they live long and prosper. Well, that they at least prosper - abundantly so.
