So I am in the market for a new rifle. I plan on using it for fun at the range, SHTF, and just to fill a slot in the safe. So what do I want M44, 91/30 and I think I am forgetting one. Oh and I was looking at classic arms and they had 91/30s with your choice of hex or round receiver. which do i want?
I like the M44 because of its size, it is shorter and lighter. Its also very accurate and the ammo can be had for cheap. But that can be said for all Nagants.
You are forgetting the M-38. It's basically a M-44 with no bayonet. I have one and it's handier than my M-44s. They are all a blast, I would hurry up and get some ammo, it seems to be drying up and going up in price.

I have the 91/30 and the M44. The 91/30 is verrrrrrrryyyyyy long. While the M44 is short like a carbine. I like the short carbine feel of the M44 but not the weight due to the bayonet which can be removed but it'd be like removing the bumper from your truck. It would look like crap!
The M38 doesn't have the bayonet and is the same "carbine" length of the M44. They seem to be harder to get than the other two esp since I like to hold the gun in my hand before I purchase.
The M91/30 I have is in great condition for the price I paid($90), but I'm also waiting for the next Rochester Dome Arena Gun Show, one guy there had at least 2 1/2 dozen M44's for sale, I think $79.95 each.
Also, if recoil is an issue, (like if you're younger, like me, I hate alot of recoil, but I'll keep my M91/30), the M44 has several commercially available muzzle brakes, I put a link on another post. If I can find it I'll post it here.

You can always do like I did. I couldn't decide so I got one of each. And since I take any excuse to post pics, here is a picture of the three. In order of appearence; M44, M38, 91/30(with a hex receiver).
If I was in your shoes I would buy a M39! Higher value, better craftsmanship, generally speaking more accurate! Next choice, a M38 or M91/59. Athough there isnt much difference between the two, the hex receivers are getting harder to come by.

Nice family shot MG. I like the ATI camo model. Currently have the same scout scope setup on my 1947 M44. I will be buying a couple more M44's. One will get the Richardsons walnut stock (when I finally get it finished), and the other may get the camo synthetic.
It also looks like there is a new illuminated reticle version of the scout scope that might be worth a look.
Everyone has there own favorites and I am sure you will find yours also
You will have to decide on several different kinds but I guess it depends on what you want to do with it shoot it hunt with it or just collect. At any rate you cant hardly make a mistake there all great

DO NOT TAKE THE BAYO. OFF THEY WERE SIGHTED IN WITH THE BAYO. FIXED IF YOU DO TAKE IT OFF IT MESSES UP THE BARREL HARMONICS. A FRIEND TOOK THE BAYO. OFF OF HIS AND NOW HE CANT HIT THE SIDE OF A BARN.

Glad to know I'm not the only one to name my guns... Lol
My CETME (go check the G3/CETME forum in the Military Firearms section) is named "Jessica". The next one up for a name is my GLOCK 27 that I carry on a daily basis as a civilian. Still working on her name... it'll come to me.
