yeah i know. since i found out about the Maverick 88 security and found they are decently cheap im looking at those. That and i like the fact that the accept Mossy 500 accessories. I'm gonna put on the mossy heat shield. My only dilemna now is to buy the 18.5" model or the 20" model. i like the fact that the 18.5" model is shorter and comes with a pistol grip stock (or so im told) but i also like how the 20" model looks with the magazine tube going to the very end of the barrel

I have a CD 12ga field grade, it does what it is suppose to, no problems. Not the best looking shotgun around but it works.

The nice thing about the 20" is increased magazine capacity. The nice thing about the 18.5" model is that other barrels can be interchanged on it. The 20" and extended mag tube go together. Have to change out both if you want to change the barrel. The mag's not as easily removed as the barrel.

Steer clear of the pistol grip stock. You'll never hit anything with that, they're just for looks. You have to put a shotgun to your shoulder and aim to hit.

only reason id consider the pistol grip is just like you said looks. only time id ever put it to use is if i happened to be goofing around with it one day with my buddy and we were shooting and we were just like hey wonder what its like. sorry to hijack the thread. ha. and dont really care about the changing of the barrels. i'd have no need. GAH!!!! decisions decisions

A pistol grip STOCK should be fine, just not a regular pistol grip only. Ricochet is right, just a pistol grip alone is not the best choice for HD. It might look cool, but it is not inherently going to let you hit what you need to hit. As he said, you need to aim the shotgun, don't buy into that, "my shotgun will cover that entire wall" or any other movie stuff. Aim the shotgun, and shoot until the threat is neutralized.

Take your time and figure out which model works best for you. I personally have the 18.5 inch model with 6 round capacity and 5 shells in a nylon carrier on the side. Just a regular mossberg 500 without a bunch of crap on it. I try to keep things simple. And I shoot it a lot to practice.

yeah i cant decide because like i said i like that the 18.5" is shorter but i like how the 20" looks with the mag tube flush with the barrel end. now if they made a 18.5" with a flush mag tube id know for sure which to go for. ha. only question left really is does that extra 1.5" make that big a difference?

No, other than allowing enough extra magazine length to go to a 7-round magazine. (My Mossy 500 will even hold 7 folded-crimp 3" shells in the magazine.)

Not that more than one shot's likely to be necessary...

Gah its so hard to decide! haha. its too bad the Remington 870 marine special whatever the hell its called is so expensive. it has the 18" barrel with a flush mag tube and i think it looks amazing with the flush tube. And now im starting to sway back to getting a Hi-Point 9mm pistol! gah why must guns be so damn expensive! haha

I think that in relative terms adjusted for cost of living and wages, they may well be cheaper now than they ever have been, at least on the utilitarian end we're talking about. I haven't studied that formally...

(Certainly today's cheap guns are likely to be safe and functional, which hasn't always been the case.)

Well, the bad guy who is getting a load of 00 buckshot in the chest isn't going to care if you have a extended mag tube. Just make sure you have enough ammo ready. If you live in a terrible drug infested neighborhood (I'm not sayin you do) and you think 4 thugs might kick your door down, that extra shell or two in the tube might come in very handy. Just something to think about.

I'd rather have a Mossberg pump for the same price

+1

You can cheap out on a field gun, but HD is a life or death possibility. Buy the best you can afford and practice....a lot.

For a start, I will try to find out who now owns the Charles Daly name.
Thats a good call. I did a bit of research and found out the Daly's are made by the Turkish firearms manufacturer Akkar .:: Akkar Silah ::. which has been in business since 1992.
In contrast, Mossberg has been around since 1919. Now the only reason i would care about these dates, is because 16 years of being in business is not a tremendously long amount of time to work all the bugs out of a weapon, as compared to 89 years.
I'm in the same situation of not wanting to spend the $260 on a mossberg if i could get away with $175.
Well, i'm gonna head down to Big 5 sporting goods and see what the daly looks and feels like...

Well. personally I like mossbergs AND , well, Hell I like Pretty much ALL shotguns.. so May be i cant be objective....
I would suggest getting a Good functioning Shotgun and Practice Practice Practice.
get 4 Dummy shells and Practice fast Tactical reloading. practice through the port shooting.... It is possible to shoot an empty pump action shotgun almost as fast as a fully loaded one.
I like 1897 winchester style shotguns for tatical use just because they dont have a disconnector. if ya wanna shoot a pump real fast ta gotta try a old 97 winnie or an older mod 37 ithica will work as well. what is nice is that you can get what ever you want and as many as you want

Well

I have a Charles Daly field tactical shotgun, and its been a good gun to me. Never have problems, and it shoots well, but......(yes theres a but) i have yet to find ANY interchangable parts for it. It was my first gun i bought when i was 18 and I didnt know too much about them. I was told that all parts are interchangeable with the mossberg 500, but thats bullshit! i tried the remmington 870 parts as well and those dont work either. If you literally want this shotgun to remain stock ( dont want a pistol grip, or any other cool gadgets) then it is a good bedside gun and one to take out with the inexperienced to play with. Theres a review from an owner.

Hey y'all, I owned one of these shotguns and it worked well for me. Mine liked Remington no.4 buck the best. Would have kept it, if it wasn't for this sweet little Mauser my buddy had... andy

Hope those dont end up in the "Famous last words" dept. My Fiance picked this Win M 1200 a few months back for a lil over 200 at a local pawnshop. It works well in HD and field applications.

Near as I can tell, Charles Daly is like Sears, they sell things with their name on it, but they don't actually MAKE anything. I've also thought about getting one of those shootguns, I needs me a pump shootgun, don't have one. I'd never go hunting with it, just want one for chasing uglies out of the house at O'dark-thirty (like that's ever happened, or ever will, in our neighborhood. Talk about white-bread neighborhoods!).

But, the wife would whizz down both legs if I parked a loaded 12gauge next to the bed. And I already keep two handguns in the nightstand, and a loaded .40 carbine under the bed she doesn't know about. I DO like those shotgun racks that fit between the mattresses and hang the gun alongisde the bed, I think that's just the shizz. But the ol' lady wouldn't go for it. She told me she saw a squirrel on the bird feeder the other day, so I parked the pellet rifle in the dining room, and I thought she'd have a cow about that. Nervous Nellie.
