Here,s a list of guns I am thinking of buying.Which one would you buy? Mossberg ATR 270win-$249 Savage 116 30-06-$349 or Remington 770 300win mag-$329 Note:the Mossy doesn,t come with a scope, but with purchasing a scope I can still kept the price under $300. The other two both come with a 3x9x40.
I'm a huge fan of Remington rifles, but after handling a M770 (Actually, it was a M710, but that's the same thing), I would refuse to buy one when comparing them to alternatives. Savage offers a very nice low priced, entry level rifle.
Sorry bravo I would have to disagree. If you just handle the rifles listed the mossberg wins. If you shoot them the savage is the victor. The 770 however is quite a bit better than the 710 with a full metal receiver rather than the bolt riding on the stock. However to each their own. I would take the Mossberg. You can burn me now if you like thats why this is a forum.
I would opt for the savage or a good weatherby vanguard, I had a model 770 and it was an excellent shooter, but i traded it for the weatherby vanguard in 270 with the tan stock black webbing, and i will not buy another remington period. But it was a great shooter

I will not dissagree that remington went down hill with the 710-770, however to say you will not own a rem period, that is kinda harsh. The rem 700 series is about as fine of an off the shelf rifle as you can get. For the topic, the SPS 700 in .30-06 can be had for about $50 more than any listed.
May I add a new one to the mix? How about the new Marlin XL7 in 30-06,270, or 25-06.
Its built like the savage even has a trigger a lot like the savage and its adjustible. MSRP on these is $326.00 for syn. stock $356 for lam. stock now if these are the MSRP's how cheap can they be found? The barrel is like the savage too. Easy to remove or replace. The syn. stock has two pillars for the barrel molded in. I think this will be a real buy.
If you're on a tight budget, try to find a Stevens 200 which is the pre-AccuTrigger Savage in a grey stock and usually sells for around $200-250. the Savage is a lot of gun for the money. The Mossberg is decent, but the Rem 770 doesn't even qualify as a real gun.
To clarify: I would still buy a Remington M700 over any other bolt action rifle. The Remington M597 is my favorite .22LR Rifle, and the Remington M870 is my favorite pump-action shotgun. Remington is my favorite firearms manufacturer.
I just don't like the M710/M770

While that may be true, you can't take the cheapest line of a brand and compare it to the top notch...it really isn't fair.
I wouldn't compare the Remington 770 to the Remington 700, just like I wouldn't compare a Ford Focus to a Ford GT.
One more thing...Two-70, have you had bad luck with more than 1 Remington rifle, or are you basing the entire company on 1 model? I'm just wondering, because I had a 1995 Winchester Model 70 that was pure trash, yet I feel that Winchester is a very respectable firearms company.

My opinion is that the Savage is the best choice out of the one's you mentioned. But I think that you could find a better used gun in the price range you mentioned. Like one of the older Rem. 700's or Winchester 70's.
